OT - Cutting Cable

Nothing yet. I talked to Mediacom and had an appointment scheduled today and was “no-showed”. They customer service called and apologized and now their tech is scheduled to come at the end of the month.
Wait, they no showed you today, causing you an inconvenience, so now they're making you wait until the end of the month to check it out? Customer Service ftw!

I'm currently doing a free trial of Hulu, it's been pretty solid. Had an initial issue of ESPN channels not working. Hulu support said my IP was coming back with some random exception zip code that doesn't work with ESPN( think it was 50360 or something). CenturyLink said to reset my modem, and that gave me 50315 which worked fine. I live at in 50131, but as long as it works I don't care really.

Works great on our Fire TV box, but apparently Hulu's PS4 app doesn't support live TV which is disappointing. YouTube not being available on the Fire TV is a deal breaker for our setup.

I would hope YouTube would have FireTV support soon. My hangup with Hulu was no clear separation of live TV and recorded shows. It was not an intuitive guide, in my opinion.

Google and Amazon seem to be in a bit of a "spat" at the moment! There is plenty of room for both of them and their products but it just seems like both are intent on not sharing the market. I have and use both company's products and like both companies. Hope they decide to get along better soon.

One thing I haven't been able to find much about YouTube TV is the rate they plan to add channels...I do see the general "continually adding channels" type thing. I just feel like for $35 YouTube TV is a slam-dunk...but that is because I love the sports channels I would get. As I stated earlier...without HGTV or more kid's channels I might get some blow back from the family! A $35 plan would save me about $75 a month...which seems very much worth not having those additional channels.

DTV Now has is a really solid option but I would have a hard time giving those **** suckers anymore of my money...
Yeah that's the biggest thing. However, it's the only package that had all the channels we watch. They have cloud DVR in beta right now, and it works pretty solid.

When I sampled them all, DTV Now was actually my favorite. Had all the channels I wanted, including Nick and TV Land, and $5 HBO. I chose Vue, however, b/c DTV Now couldn't get their **** together in time to have a cloud DVR for fall TV.

We are trying out DTV at the moment - were on Sling before. Overall it's pretty solid, but one thing that is super annoying is that you can't see a preview of what's on a channel - like on ESPN in the guide it just says "College Basketball". No team names. It's basically a deal killer for me.

If there's a way to change this, please someone let me know.

In the beta testing version for cloud DVR, the guide is completely changed.

I've now tested/used SlingTV, DirecTVNow, and Hulu Live. All are pretty comparable except but each has its own distinct drawback.

I need two users on my plan, similar to the way Netflix offers. Each accommodates this, but only one does it the way I need. My daughter is on campus at ISU and I want her to use whichever app I'm on.

Sling - the 2-tier Orange/Blue package is dumb. Sling's Orange package offers several channels and all can be watched from 3 tv's anywhere. The problem is that ESPN and other channels aren't on the Orange package. So I signed up for the Blue package to get ESPN's. The issue is that the Blue package can ONLY be used on 1 device. So, while I liked Sling in general, they're gone during football/basketball season. For $5 it has the DVR option too. You can't get all local channel's, but if you ask during signup they'll send you an over-air antennae for free.

DirecTVNow - I like DTVN, and feel like this is really close to being ideal. Except the buffering. Non-stop buffering. But over the past two weeks they seem to have done something and the buffering doesn't seem to be as bad as it had been. DTVN does allow 2 TV's to be watched anywhere at the same time. No DVR option yet. You do get all local channels.

Hulu Live - this was an OK option. The "guide" is a little clunky. The problem I had here was that all TV's had to be in the same house across the same modem-address. So this was a short-lived experiment for me. Seemed like I got all local channels.

So I'm back to DTVN for now, but may switch back to Sling once basketball season is over. DTVN did give me 50% the first month I switched back.

I didn't have any problems with buffering, however, it seemed like during prime time the picture went really "soft" sometimes. Definitely not even DVD quality. It was before I upgraded to gigabit internet but I still had 200mbps at the time, which should have been more than adequate.

I read that DTV is working on a unified platform, so the experience will be identical between streaming and satellite customers. I look forward to seeing that.

I’ve mentioned this before in this thread, but I have been streaming tv now for 3ish years. I have tried sling (initially and recently to see if it changed), PsVue, Hulu with live tv, YouTube tv all on roku, amazon fire, and Sony smart tv when available. In my experience nothing compares to the interface of PsVue on sony consoles or amazon fire. If you are using roku they have updated a guide with PsVue, but it is nowhere near the amazon or Sony versions. The guide is huge for me and it has made me not miss Directv at all. As far as packages Hulu with tv and YouTube tv would be great, but I watch a lot of AMC and Discovery so that was a deal breaker that Hulu does/did not offer those channels. I have found that services connected with a parent cable/satellite company are just good enough to entice you in but poor enough to make you want to go back to cable/satellite service. Even though cable/satellite companies have lowered their costs, they burned their bridge with me by charging what they were. PsVue has recently added the local Channels in my area too, but I still use an antenna. It is amazing the picture you will get from over-the-air antennas compared to any tv service, and it’s not delayed. These streaming services change so frequently that it is hard to keep up and my info may already be out dated. If you want to take my experience, great. If you don’t, I wish you luck in your streaming journey.

But aren't those games free if you use the March Madness App? I know it's a pain, but you're only talking about 2 weeks of viewing. YouTube TV sounds like the best sports deal to me, the problem I was seeing with their channel offerings was that they didn't have the NFL Network, but that's not a problem anymore now that the Thursday Night NFL games are moving to FOX.

I thought only the first two rounds were available on the app for free?

The app last year played all 67 games

There was a catch though: you got 3 hours free of any games that were on a Cable network (TBS, TNT, TruTV) and once those 3 hours were up you had to log in with a paid cable/satellite subscription. All the games that aired on CBS were free to watch in the app.
