I don't have a lot of years left to watch Cyclone sports-- I'm 88. So tell me why I should be excited about Bball next year. We need a quick turn around.
Hunter is the only guy of the returning players that has a chance of improving. There is nobody who will morph into the next Naz Long or Georges Niang.Of the recruits, King I and King II might be pretty good, but they aren't clones of Cade Cunningham and Chet Holmgren, in other words One and done.
Gary Thompson used to talk about confidence a lo when he was Cyclone TV analyst . When KState got the lead down to single digits, Cyclone body language said,"We're beat" Bad shooting and stupid turnovers comes from a lack of confidence
As for my confidence, I don't think this team will win another game. HELP !!

Because you are a fan of Iowa State, and every year brings with it hope. I know what you said about being 88.....congrats. We should all be so lucky.

But try to remember back in Johnny's days. Did it matter who was coming back and why? Did it matter when Johnny was coach ISU couldn't beat a junior high team on the road?

Don't get caught up in all the "cult of personality" crap that social media and more specific.......Cyclonefanatic had bred. This sight was started to get a men's basketball coach fired and here we are today. It doesn't matter how many wins they get, if the coach isn't popular................screw it, what have you done for me lately?!

Don't be that way, don't get to caught in TJ this, TJ that........just enjoy each and every game. Who knows, they play like they did in December come the first of March, all this will be forgotten.

I'm only 62 and believe I'll never reach your ripe age. But even at 62 I can say I've had a lifetime of incredible memories to justify my existence. Being 88, I'm sure you have a ton more. Congratulations! As for your pursuit of optimism, I see lowering my bar makes for more satisfaction. This team has already exceeded my bar from the beginning of the season. If TJ does half as good next season, things are definitely looking up.

CONGRATULATIONS on reaching 88! We should all be so blessed!

In October I was looking for a synergistic response from this group. The whole would be greater than the sum of the parts. And they had that until mid- Jan. Not now. And they can't shoot-- never could.

Getting to 88 is better than the alternative, but being here is not easy I've never been this old before. I have started every bball season since Johnny Orr with optimism except the last Larry Eustachy year and the Last Prohm year.

Maybe, just maybe, there will be a couple high impact guys in the portal. We know TJ can recruit. The next IZB is out there. And because you deserve it Oldgeezer, maybe the next Fizer is out there too.

I'd say that when you look at where the team is today, TJ got it there with Conditt as the only returnee from the prior year making a big impact this year. And that impact has truly been up and down.

Let's say theoretically that all the seniors leave after this year even with the ability to return for their COVID year. TJ would still be going into next with Hunter as a major minute returnee at the most important position on the floor and you can probably chalk Tre King in at a starting big position who will have been practicing with the team for half a season so will not need to be caught up on everything. Then you'd still have Grill and Enaruna as guys who can come off the bench who have played significant minutes. That's 4 guys returning compared to one. And that's not factoring in any COVID returnees. And still has some more bench options in Rob Jones and Tre Jackson as well as a 3 man freshman class compared to just Hunter coming in.

That gives TJ the ability to narrow the focus in the transfer portal. Find scoring and shooting and improved play in the post in 2 or 3 guys rather than having to get 6 guys in to fully rebuild the roster. Plus, now that TJ is a returning coach we shouldn't have any last second transfers like Johnson and Hinson. Guys will know their spots so we won't be handcuffed a month out from the start of the season. He got a 2 win roster with hardly anyone returning to at least 16 wins and guaranteed non-losing season. What can he do with a 16+ win roster and some retention including the most important position on the floor?

TJ has shown he can win those transfer recruiting battles - narrowing the focus to just needing a couple high level guys should mean that next year the top talent on the roster can be improved again while the larger freshman class continues to build the bottom of the roster and help with retention going forward. Future is bright no matter how painful the last month has been so long as it doesn't impact roster retention.

Being in mid-February and still actually having expectations for the postseason is an amazing accomplishment. One that you'd have to be a huge optimist to even have at the beginning of the season. Next year's recruiting class is off to a great start, and through addition, attrition and knowledge of the system, we should be even better next year.

I won't count these guys out yet this year either. They just desperately need to break back through and regain their confidence. If they do that, they could still sneak into the tournament, or the NIT. Either would, again, be an amazing accomplishment.

TJ is one of the best all around recruiters in the country (HS,Transfer market). He will always always always bring in talent. Given a full year to actually fold in to ISUBB I bet we are going to have good news before the next season in terms of players leaving and players incoming.

How'd this team demolish Iowa, beat a good Tex Tech team and lose by one at Lawrence (ref's missed a goal tending for the win) and then regress? No inside threat makes for long shots which they are not good at, that's why they have not gone away from the high post offense even though it is not working that well. I think TJ has exceeded expectations his first year even though the last four weeks have gone south. Kalshur (sp) who was expected to be a scorer, has had plenty of opportunities but unfortunately was given the green light and is now throttled. Grill and Kunc are inconsistent so the offensive plan has not worked out. Coaches can not shoot the ball or execute they can only scheme, so at some point it is on the players. I am optimistic for next year. TJ is an excellent recruiter.

I'm waiting to see if TJ can get any help in the portal, but like you, I'm not seeing much hope for next year without some major changes, especially if Brockington is gone.

King looks to be a solid recruit to build around but the other two look like Perkins/Uhlis level role players.
