Open Drake job

I am sure his salary right now is just fine. He is a fairly young guy that makes over $200K. It wont be about the money. If he feels Drake is a step up in his career and will be closer to his ultimate goal, then you have to support him in that.

I too agree that there will be better jobs out there, so for his sake, I hope he doesnt take the Drake job. We won't have him much longer, but I think that speaks volumes about our program.

Guys it's a D1 head coaching job in a very good mid major conference. It'd be a great get for TJ.

and he's not getting a better gig without taking a job like this first.
I disagree. Drake is in the bottom half of the MVC, IMO. He can do better.

Hatfield club saying she wants head coaching experience with Iowa ties. Sounds like iowa assistant
Iowa ties could mean a lot of things. As someone else mentioned, could be Horner (though I personally doubt it) or a host of other candidates.

Its still a MVC job with low expectations. Can you imagine if he led them to the tournament?

Davis got 7 million out of 1 successful year at Drake

its a good job if your an assistant with no head coaching experience

Horner? Sandy would be fired. A HS coach who can't make state with Mr. Basketball??

Does tj have any head coaching experience anywhere? Drake said to be a candidate you have to have head coaching experience at some level.

I think there are probably a hundred thousand people who would get the job before Horner and that is probably way conservative.

Any other job in the MVC is a better job than this. Seriously. Yes, he will probably get a job a mid-major. But not one of the worst. Don't know them all of the top of my head but any school in the MAC or Horizon league would be better than Drake. Drake is where coaching careers die. Aside from Keno, how many Drake coaches moved on to other head jobs?

One of the top candidates for this will be Darian DeVries. Assistant at Creighton currently and was for Altman before "he who must not be named." Grew up in Aplington, Played at UNI.

For Horner, it makes sense. For an assistant on a mid-major bench, it makes sense. For a DIII or DII coach, it makes sense. For the top assistant of a major conference team? Just don't see it. Maybe Abdelmassih. Not Otz.

That isn't meant to bash on Drake.

Alot also depends on how ISU finishes the season. Win the big 12 championship, and then make noise in the NCAA, and I bet TJ will be getting some decent job offers

One of my first thoughts too...knows MVC, local angle, experience for awhile, etc.

Here's a question for you (without looking it up), who was the Drake coach before Dr. Tom? Since you seem to be the expert on Drake and it being a place where careers go to die. Of the last three coaches one was a last/retirement job, the other moved on to a high major job, and the third didn't pan out at his first head coaching job.

Before Dr. Tom would be Kanaske (sp?), Rudy Washington and Garner... Right? And who went on to a head job somewhere? Garner maybe. I don't know the conditions under which he left. But that has to take us back... 20 years? No expert on Drake. But not a track record of being a solid stepping-stone job.

It was a good program in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. Was a bad program in the late 80s and 90s. And most of us know about Dr. Tom, Keno, and Phelps.

And saying every school in the MVC, MAC, and Horizon is a better job than Drake shows your ignorance. Currently its in the middle of the pack somewhere for those three leagues. Not great but its a job all but the very top assistants would take a call from.

Who is worse in the MVC? Evansville? Okay, maybe.

In the MAC? Buffalo? I'd probably give you that one too. Anyone else?

Horizon league? Yeah, that may be a stretch. Being a part of the MVC probably elevates it above these teams but it is probably the best comparison. In terms of jobs, I would maybe put Drake in the middle of that league.

Feel free to point out my ignorance.

Although his post is now gone, I went through and looked at the Horizon league jobs. Drake is a better job than Loyola-Chicago and Youngstown State. Looking at the others, though... Would you pass on Detroit Mercy for Drake? Wright State or Valpo? Wisconsin-Milwaukee? I wouldn't.

Of course, I wouldn't be offered!

He already makes quite a lot for an assistant. Fred took less money so he could pay TJ more.
Phelps as head coach made 50k more than TJ does now. Give him a slight raise and TJ will wait for a better job. Pretty sure Keenan Davis is available

Drake has been a grave yard due to academic requirements and lack of success, support, media, etc. TJ has the recruiting ability to pull in some good players. He has already proven his worth as a top assistant so no reason not to take a chance, its not like he can't go back to being a big time assistant if it doesn't work out. If he likes Iowa and his future wife wants to stay, it would be hard not to be interested. Plus pretty sure he would know how to beat Creighton.
