On That Note: To the 9’s (part 2) 1979

ELO
“Discovery”
May 31, 1979

Based mainly on the strength of individual songs, not necessarily the full-scope. Not quite the splash of its two predecessors, “A New World Record” and “Out of the Blue.” But it did reach No. 1 in UK, band’s first album to so. By this point, ELO’s album-charting heyday was almost over (at least in the U.S.). It gets at least an honorable mention.

The group’s highest-charting U.S. single and only song in top 5 on that chart. One of my favorite singles from ’79.

I give Jeff Lynne credit , this is a perfect intertwining of prog and disco.

Saving this Spot for The Who, The Kids Are Alright. I remember seeing the movie/documentary at a Campustown theater at the time. Also went out and bought the double LP. It was cool to see the live performances (in the days before YouTube - or even VHS/DVD concert ownership options existed) and also to have them on vinyl at the time. I'll drop in some cuts later today. Have to bug out for a few...

I doubt this is the clip from the Kids Are Alright movie. It says Director's Cut. I know there was a lot of Woodstock footage in the film, so this will be as close as I can get. It was a long time ago...

Interesting aside (at least for me) with OTN's decade-by-decade lists, comparing how much (or sometimes how little) music style changed in a 10-year span, based on the most enduring LPs. I didn't specifically pay attention to it last year when we did "Gr8ts From the 8s," but making some mental notes during this year's series.

Once in a while you come across a gem of an album that for some reason is not widely appreciated. This (from 1979) is one of them. This isn't even the best song in my opinion, but it was the one single (I believe) so I've included it.
