Old- fashioned cold remedies

I got the worst case of laryngitis that I've ever had, after the bowl game. My voice was not just hoarse, it was completely gone. From Thursday to Monday, I couldn't do anything but whisper. It has slowly come back over the course of the last week. Of course, it coincided with a nasty cold as well. I have been trying all kinds of things to get some relief, with little effect.
Sounds like me at Thanksgiving. Then I had a sore throat that kept coming and going. Went to Dr. yesterday. Gave me antibiotic (just as a precaution) and said to use Flonase. Said my nose and sinuses are all inflamed and swollen. Causing drainage and thus the sore throat.

Is there anyone right now that doesn't have something? I swear everyone is coughing, sneezing, or running nose or congestion. It's everywhere!

Also, Covid is going crazy too. So that’s nice.

Came down with a cold and can’t get rid of it. My mom always took a teaspoon and heated up in boiling water. Then she filled it with sugar and whiskey. Let it cool a little and then fed it to me, under a towel. Worked as you were sweating it out

As a kid my grandmother gave each of us grandkids Black Velvet and Honey. I remember most of us faking colds at grandma's house just so we could have it. I think she gave it to us to shut us up and make us sleep.

I have always contended that Mucinex is the wonder cure for anything sinus related. Just lets those things drain. You’ll have your nose run all day, but at least it isn’t that thick mucus stuck in your sinuses just creating a full blown infection.
Does that work for plugged ears, too? Or just nasal/sinus areas? I've never tried it.

It works for plugged ears too. But you've got to get the Mucinex D, which is over the counter from the pharmacist and not what you get in the aisle at the store.

Well enough. If they’re just plugged with wax. But 90% of the time for me by the time my ears are plugged fully it is because they are swollen from an infection.

Oh yeah, Mucinex is the best I’ve ever used for any chest or sinus congestion.

I’m talking about the pre-congestion phase where you get that scratching/burning feeling and are still kinda in denial that you’re getting a cold. Attacking it early seems to be the best option

Beyond the typical over the counter stuff, the hot toddy option does have some validity. The steam and warmth from it can help with congestion, the coating effect from the honey can sooth a sore throat, and the whiskey can help you sleep. I believe the alcohol can also help a bit with congestion as it causes blood vessels to shrink.

Honey seems to tame coughs for the kids. My allergies are bad enough all year that a bad cold just feels like I’m tired.

I was pretty plugged up when I had Covid in the fall and discovered that if I gargled salt water before bed, or got up during the night and did, it seemed to relieve the congestion a bit in the morning.

And you'll save yourself some money by just buying the generic pseudoephedrine and guaifenesin. The Mucinex branded stuff is like 2x+.

Sounds like a stripped down version of a hot toddy.
I remember when my mom had me try one of those when I was sick. Maybe some Black Velvet, and sugar water. I also remember thinking I'd rather take NyQuil than ever have another hot toddy.

But that NyQuil was some good stuff.

Vitamin C and zinc when you very first start feeling symptoms can help.
I think this is a miracle cure. For about 3-4 years my family has kept air borne or the Walgreens knockoff on hand. Once someone starts feeling symptoms, they take it as recommended for a couple days. Seems like no one has had a bad cold since.

I've had several occasions where that first scratchy throat/bit of congestion starts, and has yet to grow into a legit cold.
