OL Sam Rengert Commits

I think the difference this staff is making is that even though landing a 4 star is rare, they are getting the higher rated 3 stars, and they are definitely better when it comes to player development. I love the kids we are pulling in and if we can get a conference title and maybe even make the playoff, recruiting will improve even more.

Yep.

They are identifying guys they like, offering them before many P5s, getting them to visit (always the most important part for ISU), and closing the deal.

I'm not 100% sold on them being great developers. Our OL hasn't been good the last three seasons. Obviously their first class is still in the program, and they had a very short amount of time to complete that class, but it's mostly been a bust in terms of OL.

The next class looks better:

Newell
Hudson
Knipfel
Bolton
Kleinow
Nogaj

The first goal should be getting to a conference title game. Recruits are starting to realize that Campbell and ISU aren't getting lucky. They're building a solid program that will play in some big games if the staff stays intact.

Bolton and Nogaj are gone aren't they? I agree, the o-line had kinda been the one weak spot but I expect that to get figured out.

There is other way to show we are not getting lucky. For example two years of 8 wins is very solid. Big wins over texas, oklahoma, and iowa could be very beneficial.

The first class was pretty much desperation, so they get a pass for that. The second class, had some better guys, but a could of the more promising ones bailed before they could see the field. Last years class has some guys pushing for playing time. Some of these guys have stepped up, some are playing, but there are a lot of opportunities to play next year.

You guys are forgetting Knipfel in the...second class? He and Newell are good, Hudson is coming on, and Kleinow still has a chance.

Then they really hit their stride.

And remember, Grant Treiber’s “other” finalist was Oregon. Not exactly “under the radar”.

I am not forgetting Knipfel or Newell. Both great gets and solid players. Just looking at 5 returning starters and knowing that 4 will be gone next year. That is a lot of guys to replace, and that fact that none of these promising guys has actually done much on the field is concerning to me. Not questioning the recruiting, but guys still have to step on the field and play together.

Can someone give a general rundown of how the Oline recruiting is coming along...
Sure. Just to give a quick overview...

‘17 Class
JC transfer Josh Lnipfel was a godsend. With three years to play, he’ll be a senior this Fall.

AHS’s Collin Newell grabbed the starting center position, and the staff reportedly thinks he’ll be a beast. Currently around 6’4 300. Sophomore.

Rob Hudson started to put it together in the Spring. Should play regularly at a guard spot this Fall at a listed 6’6” 335. Will contend to start 2020. Also a Soph.

Alex Kleinow (6’6” 300) has a chance at tackle, but last I heard was slowed by injuries.

2018
The staff loves Trevor Downing (6’4” 305) and Joey Ramos (6’5” 300 or so). Both saw spot duty last season, while keeping their redshirt. Both will play, perhaps even start. Seem a lock to start as sophomores on 2020, Downing at guard, Ramos at tackle, perhaps guard—depending on other developments.

*Zach Ross (6’2” 300) blew out a knee as a HS senior, and is behind the other two.

2019
A broad mixture among the four signees. Jake Remsburg (6’6” 300) is very physical, and reportedly will start out at right tackle.

Jared Hufford (6’5” 300) enrolled early, and I believe, worked at both guard and tackle.

Darell Simmons was a sleeper noted for his quickness—and apparently reported at around 6”3 305.

And perhaps the gem of the class is Grant Treiber (6’6” 385) who is very athletic(IMO), and had an official visit to Oregon. I’m penciling him in as the starter at Lat in 2020.

2019?
Tyler Miller is on the neighborhood of 6’9” 300, and could round into a very good player with continued hard work and improvement.

Hayden Pauls is somewhere around 6”4 265 right now—and is very quick and nimble. If he can maintain that agility as he puts on muscle, he’s a total stud.

Brady Petersen (Ankeny) was offered at camp. At a current listed 6’5 265, he kind of reminds me of Colin Newell at the same stage.

Then there’s Sam Rengert. At 6’7” 285, sounds like he’s a steal. See above.

And they may not be done in this class.

So, some potential studs, some guys who are versatile, others with potential. Probably the best mix I’ve seen since I started following Cyclone football and football recruiting—about forty years ago.

Matter of fact, I’m thinking Grant Treiber may prove to be the best prototypical LT I’ve seen in a Cyclone uniform since Karl Nelson.

*Keith Sims was not a prototypical left tackle—even if he played there.

Hope that helps!

My post was about player development. Yes, we have some talent in the pipeline. I know you were answering someone's question about recruiting.

The OL has been the weak link every season. Until we see that change, it's hard to say we've developed guys on the line. That's all I was saying, but I guess that's too negative for this board.

I mean, we also lost the coach for those guys after 2 years. Which isn't exactly helpful for consistent development. Getting Manning back will be a great help in development.

We haven't exactly been loaded with talented OL to begin with. If you look at each of the last few classes, the talent is in the younger guys. Give them a little more time on the development front. This will obviously be a telling season with the experience returning, but consistent OL play takes years to develop. I think they are getting there.

To be fair, the OL is the position that takes the longest to develop, its not crazy to think we are still a year or two away from seeing that development. Plus, just because the OL has been a weak point, that doesn't mean they aren't being developed. Maybe this is their ceiling, its not like they inherited a group of studs.

But it shouldn't be that hard because everybody knows that "nobody plays defense in the Big 12".

IMO this year should be the year when we see the o-line take a big step forward. Between the young guys and the returning experience we should be set to play well in the trenches in game one not game 7.
