Since I'd like to increase the general knowledge level of wrestling on the forum I will try to do a thread like this for every meet when I have the time to write it. I did this for a few meets last year and got some interest, so hopefully people will find it worthwhile.

Assuming we don't get anybody back from injury today, here's the line-ups:

125: #12 Ryak Finch, RFr., 8-0 vs. #4 Jarrod Patterson, Jr., 6-0
133: Shayden Terukina, Fr., 4-2 vs. #14 Jordan Keller, Sr., 5-2
141: Luke Goettl, RFr., 0-0 vs. #8 Kendric Maple, RSo., 5-0
149: Joey Cozart, RFr., 7-2 vs. 14 Nick Lester, RSo., 5-1
157: Luke Swalla, Fr., 0-2 vs. #12 Matt Lester, RSo., 4-1
165: #5 Andrew Sorenson, RSr., 8-0 vs. Bubby Graham, RJr., 3-3
174: #10 Chris Spangler, RJr., 1-1 vs. Chase Nelson, Jr., 7-3
184: #15 Boaz Beard, RSo., 3-1 vs. #17 Erich Schmidtke, RJr., 5-0
197: Cole Shafer, RSo., 5-3 vs. Keldrick Hall, RJr. 5-1
285: #18 Matt Gibson, RJr., 9-1 vs. Elijah Madison, Jr., 3-3

The two key matches are at 125 and 184. Finch knocked off an elite guy on Friday so this match against Patterson will be an early test of whether he is AA material for this year. Beard has another chance against a quality opponent and hopefully we can see him pull out a win as he finishes shaking off the rust of his time away from that mat. Overall I think that this meet is going to come down to bonus points. Oklahoma is favored in the light weights and Iowa State is favored in the heavier weight classes.

Here's my predictions:
125: Patterson by decision 0-3
133: Keller by major 0-7
141: Maple by major 0-11
149: Lester by major, 0-15
157: Lester by Tech Fall 0-20
165: Sorenson by Tech Fall 5-20
174: Spangler by major 9-20
184: Beard by decision 12-20
197: Shafer by decision 15-20
285: Gibson by decision 18-20
Team score: Oklahoma over ISU 20-18

If Finch can pull out a win and/or we can get a pin or two out of guys like Sorenson and Spangler we can pull this out, but I really do think that both teams will win 5 matches and they'll end up winning it on bonus points. We have to many guys like Swalla on the mat right now getting thrown to the wolves and need our starters back on the mat.
 
I appreciate someone talking about wrestling. As far as the season goes, I'm keeping my expectations low as we are so green. I can see us being
successful individually, but as a team, I'm holding out for next year.
 
From watching the first five matches, I'd say out lighter guys are getting schooled on technique. You can tell its killin' Jim Gibbons on the mediacom broadcast. Will see in the next five matches, but KJ seems to have it together with the bigger guys. Would luv to have Gibbons working with the lighter weights.

Hopefully Gadsen was just suffering some first match jitters, because he didn't do very well today. Other than that Finch proved he has some growing to do before he's ready to beat the elite at 125, Shayden put on a decent match that showed he has potential for the year, and Moreno had a great match against Lester, getting beat at the end by a more more experienced wrestler. Having Moreno back in the lineup is big.

Gadson is done for the year and will apply for a medical hardship per a post at CR.

Too bad, his very first match. Hope that with the additional time his shoulder heals.

His dad is former Cyclone Willie Gadson, a high school coach and a nice family. Kyven is arguably the best wrestler on the team.

That sucks for him. Hopefully he'll be able to rehab over the next 6 months or so and be ready to get on the mat next fall.

From a team perspective this is probably the best weight class for it to happen at. We have 3 guys and 184/197 that all are Big 12 caliber wrestlers (Beard, Ward, Shafer), so that is the place in our lineup we can best afford to lose a starter for the year.

Thanks for your posts Judoka. I remember you doing these last year, and you did a great job. I know it takes time and effort and is not always possible. I jump in when I can and feel I have something to add. Occasionally I take very extended breaks, and arguably all of us at times have better things to do. Your posts here are appreciated.

I agree. Good job Judoka. I wish they had left Shafer in at 197 and let Gadsen heal completely. Obvisously jumped the gun putting Gadsen in. Pretty sure Shafer would have won that one and raised his winning percentage. Moreno put in a real good fight. Glad to see him back.

Heard on the other thread that Trent Weatherman is out for the year also. That is too bad.
 
I was really confused because Gadsen had been taken down and then took an injury timeout but when they resumed he was on top and Hall escaped and then was up 3-0. But I just looked at the play-by-play and it says Hall chose to be down. So is that the rule that after an injury timeout the other wrestler can choose up, down or neutral??

Yes. New rule this year. After injury time, opponent gets to choose position.

Also, you can give a "free" escape and start neutral instead of doing the optional start and pushing a guy away (the end of the Spangler match, for example).
