Plenty of good weekend left so I'll try to keep this as concise as I can -

Offense
  • OL - I do get Oklahoma blitzed, I also recognize they have 2 NFL guys on their D line in Nico Bonnito and Perrion Winfrey. Buy sweet moses 7 sacks is unacceptable. OU was in the backfield immediately, our OL showed no confidence out there, showed no grit at the line, and just looked off all day. Jeff Meyers should be on the hot seat and I wouldn't bat an eye if he was let go. (given how much the o line has regressed in 2021). This unit is hurting the team lately, and today they couldn't open up ANY room for Breece.
    • TCU game, bowl game, and spring ball are big for development. I need to see Hufford be more consistent he had a couple bad penalties out there. I am continuously down on Trevor Downing, not sure what is happening with him, and Newell straight up got abused today. We clearly need a better starting 5 on this unit. I will be curious what Hayden Pauls and Tyler Miller can do in the spring, I also think we should be looking to upgrade at guard. Transfer portal season is soon.
  • Charlie Kolar's best game as a cyclone. Should be a 3rd to 5th round pick. Today showed exactly why. He's so smooth as a pass catcher, runs awesome routes, and catches everything. NFL talent personnel had to have been impressed by today. I as a fan will really miss watching him play.
  • Joe Scates - two catches for 38 yards welcome back young man. But what is the deal with him? He has clearly been suspended for a month. I'm happy he's a cyclone do not get me wrong. But at a certain point he's a junior in this program, either "get it" and stay with this program and buy in, or just leave.
  • Jaylin Noel - another positive. He had 7 for 32 yards so the avg per catch leaves some to be desired after the catch, but I really, really like this young man's future.
  • Purdy was solid most of the game despite getting wrecking balled about 20x out there. I have huge respect for him playing most of the game given his line today. The last pass was a tough one, he floated it high to avoid it getting tipped, and it was just a foot and a half too high.
  • If Breece wants to shut it down in the bowl then so be it. He's given his all to this program. Let's see what Jihrehl Brock and Deon Silas can do with the rock.
Spec Teams
  • Andrew Mevis is Iowa State special teams right now, wish we had another year of him

Defense
  • Mike Rose, one of his best games. 2 sacks, 3 tfl's. As an nfl talent evaluator, he should go in the top 5 rounds. What a stud. And he's doing all of this while not close to 100%.
  • Craig McDonald - 10 tackles and 1 int. This dude to me is going to be a leader on the D next year. He plays so physical, and is generally in the right spot. A stronger, perhaps quicker version of Eisworth to me.
  • #15 Myles Purchase. When Kymani King got hurt he played a lot, and he looked very good in meaningful minutes. He was in on a couple deflections and didn't get burned today. Really like his future here. I also hope his stud linebacker brother joins the program.
  • The LB core (minus caleb williams long td run) I thought was very good all day. Gerry Vaughn is not huge but I do like the way he plays, fairly reliable.
  • Will McDonald is clearly dinged up but ended up with a good day out there.
  • Blake Peterson is gritty and has size, I like his future in the defense. Isiah Lee was effective some.
  • This defense needs a corner to step up to play with Myles Purchase out there for 2022, but I do feel confident about Purchase now moving forward. He was covering 4* guys in the second half and didn't get beat once
  • Our pass D to me is much better right now. Watching Tech tonight (of course their QB can't hit water if he fell out of a boat tonight), that was kind of a weird outing last week which i chalk up to a qb having an oddly accurate day.

As @JStanz51 pointed out, in the first half I did not like all the trickery from Tom Manning. The game was close and I thought it was getting too cute out there. The call to have Breece do a half back pass downfield was confusing. I did like seeing Dekkers get experience in the drive down the field and his TD. Yes his pick was bad but that drive showed me some accuracy and confidence from him and he had command out of the offense.

Personally I think Manning is in a tough spot because he's playing with a good QB, great RB, but clearly one of the worst OL's in the league. And that is tough on any play caller. Go win the next 2 so we can finish 8-5. I will never be totally down on a 1 score loss to OU, because I can recount the games with them as a little kid where it was 35-7 at half routinely.

The play calling at times was us out thinking ourselves. You have 3rd and 1 deep. You have two plays to get it. Why pitch to breece when you have been able to get that one yard each time you needed. Why run Brock on another when you have had breece get one when you need it? Out thinking yourself.

I don't mind Hall to the outside but both plays imo looked like overcomplicating things and letting OU continue to T off and screw up the front.

What was also weird was how with Dekkers, they ran up, quick snap under center and surged for an easy 1st down. I know Dekkers is bigger but it's not like Purdy wouldn't have gotten the same result.

So...ISU can run that, that easily?

May have wanted to avoid the cheap shots on Brock. Not sure if they showed it on TV but they were letting OU basically just hammer Brock as late as they wanted after throws. Was getting disgusting. The two big hits on him were straight up targeting and not even a review. The first one, he left his feet and launched himself. The second one was helmet to helmet with the crown. Text book targeting but the refs refused to call it. Brock’s safety was at risk out there.

We've had so many drives killed because we can't get a yard on 3rd and 1. Dekkers fumbled the snap and still made it look easy. They should let Dekkers handle those from now on.

The offensive line has been bad. But Purdy seems to drift out of the pocket a lot even when it seems he can hang in there for another 2 seconds.

One of these days the technology will have surround view of the whole field so the viewer can see if our receivers, notably our WRs, aren't open or that Purdy doesn't see them. I assume they aren't getting open. I am no stat guru, but I assume this year as one of the worst years for over 25 yard receptions. We need to hit on a WR in recruiting or the transfer portal in the worst way.

After rewatching the game…1) some 3rd and 1 play calls were just brutal, twice we were outnumbered to where the call was going and should’ve been changed at the LOS or from the sideline. 2) Hufford was terrible and made some very very costly penalties. 3) some strange “trick” plays didn’t amount to anything and the double pass probably lost the game 4) Purdy fumbled carrying the ball so loosely twice (hasn’t learned) 5) as stated OL was awful and Meyers needs replaced 6) the last play Purdy was locked in on Kolar but OU had three guys on him and he looked surprised that Allen was open and tried to “wish” it to him instead of planting and throwing. He should have seen OU was stacked all over Kolar.
OU messed up and we were able to recover fumbles. They hurt themselves with penalties too- we just messed up way too much. This is the most talented team ISU have every had and MANY will play on Sundays. This is also the most disappointing season in history.

2 huge plays in my mind.
How could the big hit on Purdy not be a penalty? The defensive player launched himself, left his feet, and made contact with Purdy's head. The announcers were oblivious to any of those elements of the hit, just saying he led with his shoulder, so no penalty. May I don't understand the rules.

If McDonald's strip sack in the end zone had been recovered, really by either team, for a TD or a safety, game changer.

Brock became a runner with the ball, which is why he didn't get the call. It's hard for refs to do the targeting thing when I don't think they even know what it is.

All the OU fans around us we're screaming welcome big boy football that's not targeting.

He did muff the exchange. Purdy has also done this in the past. We either need to practice this if we are going to do it.

Yes. Doesn't seem right that a fumble in the end zone can be advanced.

Hufford had a horrible day. I am sure that nobody feels worse about it than he does. Sometimes the guy across the line from you is just better than you. I am sure that he gave it his best shot, but it wasn’t quite good enough. That’s when the coaching staff needs to make adjustments to give you some help. I hope that he can keep his head up and keep working to improve his game to be the best version of Hufford that Hufford can be. He has to potential to become very good if he keeps learning and growing.

If o-line plays better, we win by 2 Td's. OSU will beat OU by 14-21 points next week.

I'm curious how many penalties the o-line had this year? Just in this game 0-line had 6

We also need to protect the ball better. We had 6 fumbles in this game, only 1 was a TO. We also had 2 interceptions. Just haven't taken care of the ball all year.

Out thinking yourself. Absolutely. IMO the biggest problem this staff has had since 2017. And for a staff that made the "Lan Ram" package so successful in short yardage situations......I would be curious as to why they don't think Dekkers (who has Lannings size) would do as well. Nothing against Purdy, he runs better than Kempt.....but a yards after contact runner he is not.
