Okie State game is looking wet

I've not been to a game in ages, but am coming this weekend to see my niece, who is an ISU cheerleader.

I am completely out of the loop on parking strategy. I don't have any kind of parking pass, and I know that the grass lots could be closed. Does anyone have an idea of where to park? I'm fine with parking away from campus and bussing in... what's a good place to do that?

At least there is a ton of additional parking if they close the grass lots.

The app that came on my phone is always wildly different that everything else. A few days ago it said our local temperature was 12 degrees warmer than the multiple readings we were getting from our house. We aren’t that far from the airport, I don’t think there was a 12 degree difference.

Occasionally when the weather folks are freaking out, the app on my phone is actually right. It says Ames will be dry until 6:00 pm Saturday. It could happen, right? Does all of your rain gear have to fit in the clear plastic bag?

Not that this was a highly touted matchup to begin with but the forecast may be impacting ticket prices; StubHub now showing tickets as low as $13.

I tend not to take these model-based weather projections as literal.

I'm more of a "magnitude and direction" sort of guy.

I think the various sources and models are building a consensus about this weekend, though...

-- definitely a high risk of some serious fall rainstorms in central Iowa on Saturday
-- the later into the day, the worse the risk
-- this game at 11:00 AM would likely be drier than it will be at 3:00 PM
-- some (small) possibility of another game with multiple delays for extreme weather/cancellation

Pretty sad that such a marquee matchup is going to have to be played in the rain. Thank goodness we have our vaunted ground attack to fall back on.

Too bad we don’t have that Aussie punter we had for the Drake game to entertain us. Husband and I were trying to guess if he would ever catch the snap and got thrown off when we switched punters.

Park on campus and walk down (memory lane) to the game.

This is a good option; otherwise, parking just south of Highway 30 in the parking lots there and then walking would be another. There's a walking path that goes under the highway and takes you out by Vet Med. I parked there to walk and meet some friends in the grass lots off 16th the weekend of the Iowa game, and I saw plenty of folks set up and tailgating there. Here's a link to the general area I'm referring to: https://maps.app.goo.gl/eMzKSpp8TVRh6WQV8.

It’s pretty easy to park on campus. I am guessing between weather, record, and not an in-state opponent, even easier.

It used to be a steal to park in the Union ramp. It is still cheaper than grass lots but they raised the price a bit in last few years. Only downfall is sometimes it takes a while to get out. It is an easy walk.

There are lots of free spots on campus on the weekend. There is a map floating around somewhere. If you are coming early to see niece, that east parking deck by the Gerdin business building is an easy walk, free on the weekend, and bottom part is covered for the rain. It is popular though so have to be there early. The nearby lots at Forker also an easy walk.

For CyHawk we parked on NW end of campus by engineering buildings. Easy to get out of town, a bit longer walk.

Edit: And while I typed this longass message, map is posted!

Campus lots are generally open after 5:00 PM on Friday through to Monday morning. There are clear signs for the few spots that are reserved 24/7 for maintenance vehicles and the like.

Historically I've tried to park in either the surface lot or the parking ramp near Heady/East and the Gerdin Business Building. Around Bessey Hall is a backup to that, or in front of Carver or Beardshear.

How far northwest onto campus you'll need to go depends heavily on the weather and the game. I was all the way out at Town Engineering near the band practice field for the Iowa game. For an opponent like Oklahoma State on a rainy day after a 1-2 start, I would imagine you can be much closer than that.

As others have said, parking on campus is fun. The walk is a pleasant stroll through college nostalgia, and you can take in either the tailgating lots or fraternity land on your way south to Jack Trice.

The traffic getting in and out is nearly nonexistent, too, because you're so far away from the dense lots near the stadium and you're probably not going to be the first one to your car.
