***Official Texas Tech prediction thread***

OK, can this trumpeting of the 36 point stat please end? Here's the number of points given up in the last 9 games and the result:

31 vs Texas L
21 vs Tulsa W
27 vs Iowa L
28 vs UNI L
31 vs Tulsa L
31 vs WVU L
23 vs Kansas W
33 vs Texas L
35 vs Oklahoma L

What the heck is magical about 36? 2 games ended up in a win and they were the 2 lowest amounts of points given up. It's that easy. It's weird that someone even figured this out and then quotes it. Really! Stop it!

I’m confused why you stopped there.

21 BU W
31 OSU L
27 KSU L
23 TCU W
24 TTU L
03 WIU W
06 Iowa W
23 Tulsa W
27 Rutgers L
30 KSU L
26 OU L
31 OSU W (2 OT – 24 in regulation)
10 KU W
07 TTU W
33 TA&M L

That’s 24 games.

I think you are reading more into this than is necessary. It’s not about bragging how great a team ISU is, it is about the ability of this defense to consistently keep it manageable. Now if the offense was able to keep up, you would see it translating into more wins. You could also have a sucky defense that gives up an average of 45 a game but if you have a Baylor pinball offense that is scoring 70 a game it would result in wins.

Well, since giving up 36 points is not good, I don't see the sense in it. It also only works because OK got 35 points and many teams got 31. Bottom line, you give up 30 points, it's bad most of the time. So, drawing the line at 36 is not really something to hang your hat on.

Who is hanging their hat on it? Besides if all you need is the realization that giving up 36 or more is bad how come more teams haven't gone two seasons and counting without giving up 36 or more?

There is something to be said for a defense that avoids getting totally rolled by an offense week in and week out especially when they get less than stellar help from their offense.

Iowa State never gives up that many points. There is a stat floating around about them being with Alabama and someone else on not allowing over 36 points for some crazy amount of time. I see no way a backup quarterback or Mayfield for that matter scores more than 30 on Wally Burnham.

I was looking at a longer window:

09/29/2012 @ *Iowa State (6-7) W 24 - 13
10/29/2011 vs. *Iowa State (6-7) L 7 - 41
10/02/2010 @ *Iowa State (5-7) L 38 - 52
10/06/2007 vs. *Iowa State (3-9) W 42 - 17
10/21/2006 @ *Iowa State (4-8) W 42 - 26
10/11/2003 vs. *Iowa State (2-10) W 52 - 21

While those numbers are correct, I'm going to be a homer and just pitch them out the window. In 2010, I'm not arguing against a W. And before 2010, Wally wasn't even coaching here.

And, for **** sake... dat avatar.

You really do think he is the second coming of the pirate.

For your sake maybe you are right - for our sake I hope you are wrong.

It's nonsensical. Couldn't the reverse be true? The offense scored 30 last week. That's enough to win most games. But they didn't. Giving up less than 36 is not a good metric and the fact the someone looked it up (not you) to use it to show how the defense is able to keep the team in games, yet the team routinely gives up 31 points, is really not a good thing. I don't know how people cannot see that.

You win. Fire Wally, terminate the program and burn JTS to the ground.

Erik, can you teach me to burn my tickets...?

EDIT: By the way last week was a bad example. The offense scoring 30 was enough to win last week.

Never said anything about firing the coach. He is doing a good job with what he has. The thing is, if you are using a metric to say a team is doing something well, it should be a metric that means something. Giving up 36 isn't good, so who cares if you have a streak of not giving up 36 points?

ISU lost last week, right? If they don't give up 31, they win, right? It's not all about the last drive.

I'm still burning my tickets.

You know exactly why I said they scored enough to win. It took an entirely blown call for Texas to score the last points to get to 31. By rights ISU's D held them to 24.

I guess some people can't take "you win" for an answer.

Well, that makes it better. I will point out Texas played the game with their backup QB, but the D played OK. The blown call sucked, but you can't take the points off the board and they still lost. Stuff happens! Get over it.

I am over it. The fact remains that you could have chosen a much better example to make your point.

I'm done arguing with you.

Just trying to help. The 36 point streak may be the dumbest thing I have ever seen for someone to claim about their own team. I know you were not the one to come up with it, but the more anyone claims ISU has the 2nd longest streak in the nation, the more I will laugh at it. Good day, sir.

I have a bad feeling... that we're going to go out there feeling sorry for ourselves for last week and get throttled.

Hoping for the best though.
