NFL: ***Official Offseason Thread***

While not a big splash signing like Bell or OBJ, I really like my Bears getting Cordarrelle Patterson. While not a great first or second option at WR, he is a Swiss Army Knife kind of player that Nagy can get creative with.

And they're the fourth team who thinks they can unlock his potential. So far, he's never come close to what he could be. Even the Patriots only got moderate production. Less than 500 combined yards rushing and receiving and 4 TDS. Didn't exactly light the world on fire.

The guy is a good return man, I'll give him that.
And the Bears are likely to get his best effort, because if he doesn't improve, it's going to be tough to get a 5th team to bite.

Yeah, I'm not expecting him to set the world on fire, but having him and Cohen together gives them another playmaker. We'll see how they use him.

Getting him the ball in space is the key. He's as good as it gets in that situation. But he can't run a competent route to save his life. Also doesn't have the surest hands.

Yeah, the fireworks are pretty much over now. Some of those guys are going to end up being really good value deals somewhere. I expect the Colts to start getting a little more active in the next week or so. I think they're going to add a veteran edge rusher and invest at that spot in the draft as well.
One big name to keep an eye on is DeMarcus Lawrence. It looks like he and the Cowboys are pretty far apart on a long term deal and he's already said he won't play another season on the franchise tag. With the draft being as deep as it is at d-line I wonder if Dallas would try to move him and recoup that first rounder that they sent to Oakland for Cooper.

Blake Bortles was released by the Jags which comes as a surprise to no one.

As a Colts fan I'm sad to see him go. But I'm happy to see that they replaced him with a guy who will frustrate the Jags every bit as much. Nick Foles was a backup for a reason. This happens every offseason. Some team convinces itself that a backup with a few good games under his belt can replicate it over the course of an entire season. Good luck with that, Jacksonville.

Translation: They offered me a fuuuuuuuuuhhhh ton of money

Yep. At 27 with a lengthy injury history this is probably his last big payday. Time to cash in. LOL at the Josh Allen comments. That dude will spend the next three years alternately thrilling Buffalo fans with 50 yard bombs and then pissing them off by throwing the ball in the turf in front of a wide open receiver.

Don't tell me the "Josh Allen is the reason I'm here" because you walked away from a QB ten times better than Allen. If you were there for the QB's talents you would have stayed. But there was almost no chance the Chiefs were going to keep him.

Yup, just look at the buyer's remorse that Denver had with Case Keenum after just 1 season. Foles is a better QB than Keenum but after 7 years in the league now the odds are he's not all the sudden going to turn into a top 15 QB in the league as the full time starter.

It's not long before we have a "changing of the guard" at the QB position in the NFL considering a lot of the mainstay QBs are getting close to retirement. Stretching a bit with Rodgers but the other 5 QBs have been the face of their franchises for a long time and their replacement is likely going to be drafted or signed in the near future. Would not be surprised at all to see the Giants and Steelers drafting a QB this year given their roster situations and those 2 QBs I have listed below have started to tail off in production recently while you can argue the others have been having some of their best seasons lately.

Brady 41
Brees 40
Eli Manning 38
Roethlisberger 37
Rivers 37
Rodgers 35

Yeah, I don't know. It's hard to tell how long some of these guys will play. Brady had a lull late in the regular season but obviously looked sharp when it mattered. Brees finished the season looking just a little washed, and I think he has a political future beyond football so who knows how much longer he'll play. Manning has been cooked for the last three years. Roethlisberger, I don't know. He's so banged up and I don't think he's ever been a big offseason conditioning guy. Rivers looks like could play another 3-5 years if he wants. And if Rodgers adjusts his style of play to protect himself he could go another four years easy.

With the way QBs are protected anymore these older guys are in a near-perfect spot. They've seen every defense, they've seen every coverage and blitz and they can do most of their work pre-snap so they already know where they're going with the ball before the play even starts. And they have the benefit of doing all that with the security of knowing that if a defender so much as brushes them they're going to draw a flag. Brady is proving it now - take care of your body and you can play QB in the NFL well into your 40s.

Not sure if it's true, but I heard that Hill's 3 year old is sporting a broken arm, and that's thought to be at the root of the incident. If he's responsible for that, good riddance.
