NFL: ***Official Offseason Thread***

Someone always wins in a trade. Seattle could very well have won this one. But the Chiefs absolutely had to do something different than keeping the status quo on defense.

Sure, they had to get better on defense. But trading one edge rusher and a first round pick for another edge rusher is an iffy move, especially with so many players coming up for big money contracts soon - Chris Jones, Tyreek Hill, Kendal Fuller are all due to hit free agency after next season and Mahomes will be eligible for a contract extension. Once you pay your best players it becomes critically important to replenish the rest of the roster with inexpensive talent. Hard to do that without as many draft picks as possible.

I could see them letting Hill and Fuller walk.

I guess I don't necessarily see this as doing a whole lot different. Edge for Edge.

It could definitely pan out, but it doesn't seem like the chiefs are significantly better after this move, not at the price they paid.

Second year in the row and 3 out of the last 4 years the Chiefs won't have a 1st round pick so I hope they know what they are doing because outside of trading up to draft Mahomes they haven't hit on a lot of guys lately. Last year's 2nd round pick Speaks could still turn out to be a good player and Nnadi is decent DT depth but the rest of the guys they drafted barely saw the field. 2017 was Ok because they hit it big with Mahomes and Hunt, Kpassagnon hasn't played much and that's pretty much it for anyone in that year that has contributed. 2016 Chris Jones has been a beast as well as Hill but the rest of that draft hasn't turned into much.

I wonder if their main targets for the 1st round this year they just didn't feel would be there when they picked? They definitely need to address the secondary in the draft as well as probably take a WR and RB at some point too. Not worried about the Chiefs offense because their defense was so bad last year it won't matter if they score 30 or 40 points because their defense gives up just as much. They have added some nice pieces so far in free agency and trade but CB is still a real weak spot for them as is LB probably too.

Ford had 1 year that good and the rest were subpar. Clark is 2 years younger and has been far more consistent, and is better against the run.

Was Ford subpar because he wasn't good, or because he was injured? He had double digit sacks in 2016 and then was injured, which impqctei his 2017 season. Not to mention he had Tamba Hali playing the same position as him.

I'm not saying that Ford is better than Clark. I'm just saying that the gap doesn't appear to be worth a first and a second round pick. The Chiefs paid a steep price to get a guy who is maybe marginally better than who they already had. And on top of that, Clark now has a bigger contract than Ford. It definitely could work out. I just don't see how the Chiefs are significantly better though.

Maybe Ford wasn't the same player after injury and KC knew this. Clark is also younger than both Ford and Houston.

I just think it's a case of KC finding their guy and being all in with him. Clark is 25 and just hitting his prime.

Ford was never as good against the run, though. They need someone who can be better there. He’s 2 years younger, which also means something. Of Ford’s 10 sacks in ‘16, 7.5 of them came in 3 games. If he continues to do what he did this past year, then I agree. But his inconsistency was troubling. They got younger and better against the run with this trade, so I like it.

And yes, his injuries also cause me worry. I know you can’t predict them, but he has had issues with injuries.

If they can have the best pass rusher in the game and still be that horrendous as a defense, I’m ok with change.

If edge rusher was the only hole in the Chiefs D, I might be more on board, but they have a lot of spots to fill. Keeping Ford and adding a first round player seems to be worth more than Clark + nothing, imho.

I'm with ya there, and I'm certainly not smart enough to know the correct answer here. When the Chiefs went after a QB 2 years ago, I said I loved the fact that they were actually taking chances and making moves. I'm still on board with that. The Chiefs were BORING as hell for nearly my entire life, and the fact that they are making moves makes me happy and actually excited to watch them.

@AdamSchefter: Ravens are giving kicker Justin Tucker a four-year, $23.05 million extension, including $12.5 million fully guaranteed in the first two years and an $8 million signing bonus, per source. All records for a kicker. Tucker tied to Baltimore through the 2023 season.
