***Official Niang Ankle Thread***

When this thread started, most were joking about Niang's injury, and some still are. Or downplaying the significance and saying we will just have to play harder, come together, and overcome. Let's not fool ourselves. Niang's offensive production and versatility completely changes how teams defend us. With him, we spread the floor to extremes, giving Kane, Niang himself, and anyone else, room to operate - drive, shoot, pass, everything. That spacing? It's gone now. Big that punishes inside and out? Gone too. Opposing defenses will be able to lock us down, more like the traditional teams they've played all year. The rest of our team will have a tougher time getting good looks compounded by the pressure to produce more because Niang isn't there chipping in. This is completely different than when Niang has an off night with poor production (relative to his typically very high output) and some other guy(s) step up a bit. Niang and his freakish inside/outside skills won't be on the floor at all!

With 5 minutes or so left in this game, before Niang got injured, ISU was affirming the prediction of many. That we have a legit shot at the Final Four and a significant chance to win it all. When was the last time we could say that about ISU? 2000? With the snap of Niang's fifth metatarsal, those chances vanished. Niang isn't someone you replace in two days or a week, no matter the determination, will, grit, etc. Without Niang, our high hopes are no longer reasonable. We might squeak past NC with a bit of luck, but if we get into the Sweet 16 with the other top tier teams, we're screwed.

Some of you want to make stupid band aid or vertical leap jokes. Clever. The best team we've had in the last 14 years just saw their chances to win it all for the first time in school history go from decent to none. For those trying to surmise ways in which we'd have a chance, that's fine, and respectable in a way. But you're deceiving yourselves. I am going to get acquainted with this bitter, unavoidable reality now.

While I admire your readiness to give up like a Frenchman, we're still in the tournament, so we don't really have that option.
Therefore, it isn't flippant or self-deceptive to say that we're going to have to drive on without Georges, or even that we have the talent to do it. This is simply facing reality, saying "what do we have to do in order to keep on going" and getting on with it.

We still have a legit shot at the whole thing. There's no reason to give up now.
The team won't quit. Don't quit on them.

Two types of people in this world...those who see adversity and curl up into a ball, and those that face it head on and tell it to go f*** itself. I choose to be the latter - don't tell me we can't keep advancing, because while Niang won't be on the floor he WILL still be on the bench and part of the team. We WILL get behind this team and finish what we started!

Nope, we'll just get to keep posting the what ifs forever if we can't beat them.

Of course WE will, but the media, the rest of the country, etc is not going to give us ****. There's a big difference between losing to say Mercer and losing to UNC.

Preach on, brother.

Over/under : 3's we will need to win Sunday...18

18? Wtf. More like 8.

Providence almost(and likely should have) beat UNC on the back of one player and only 4 made 3's. UNC's offense is not great. Unfortunately I think we're going to have a hell of a time against them offensively without Niang, but I have faith in Hoiberg.

I hope the players and coaches aren't sulking in self pity like some on this board. Holy cow. There's still a lot of talent on this team. Everyone needs to pick up some of his production. We're going to see a focused team on Sunday that will play this game for their friend. Someone is going to surprise us.

This would have worked if the team that Mercer beat wasn't Duke. They get to go cry over their 15 final 4s, 4 national championships, and their top 10 recruiting class of 4 5 star players.

To make some of us feel a little better, maybe?

Here are my thoughts for Sunday. NC takes a huge breath and gets, dare I say arrogant since one of our starters is out. There is no way they come into this game thinking that this win just got a ton easier. Our team is pi$$ed off and wants to win one for the gipper. I think Monte is huge for this next game. I have always thought he's a gamer. No way you win two state titles if you're not (especially at point). What I have seen from him towards the end of the season is when the temperature turns up, his blood runs cold. He is clutch, but I think he holds back and lets the senior leaders take the reins. He will do more when he needs to and is asked to. Of course Naz and Matt have to play solid and I have no doubt Kane, Ejim and Dustin kick it up.

So an overconfident NC, ticked off team fighting for their fallen soldier and Monte equals a great chance of the W.

I want to go to sleep, but I just keep sitting here thinking WHY!?!?!?

We still have the Big XII player of the year and one of the best point guards in the nation. Match that with the best assist TO guys in the game. Oh yeah, we still have a three that is playing out of this world. Then throw in a guy that is coming off the bench throwing down threes like he has his whole life. What we need is three guys that can come off the bench to fill the gaps. We have the best coach we could hope for in this situation.

Yes, we lost one of the most unique players in the game, but we also have the rest of the team to hang our hat on. I don't know what will happen on Sunday and the rest of the way, but I'll be damned if I will believe we can't overcome this HUGE loss. Louisville won the whole thing after losing their stud last year. Yeah, I know we aren't them, but it happens.

Go Cyclones!

It's not impossible, it just got harder. We fans can not give up on the rest of this team. We have the best coach to make a plan and we have the best group of guys that will lay it all out there for their coach. Best possible scenario considering the circumstances that we are in. Nothing worth fighting for is easy, that's why we are all ISU fans.

I was in my 20's when I broke my foot by kicking a piece of firewood that was frozen down. I broke the 5th bone in my right foot. I went to the ER and x-rays were negative. The said a bad bruise. I went about my life, which at the time I was doing construction work and standing on ladders. I played BB every Wednesday, and Volleyball every Thursday. It hurt like hell, but I did not stop for a bruise. About 3 months later, I severely sprained my ankle. I went to the same ER for w-rays. The ankle was fine, but the did want to know when I had broken the bone in my foot, because the calcification clearly showed up on x-rays then. Problem is, it did not heel correctly and I have pain every day. My podiatrist stated that this break is easy to miss if you are not used to looking for it. I wish it would have been identified and treated correctly. This is exactly why the doctors will not clear Niang to play.

Having given you my personal story, and opinion, I believe this hurts us and we will have to change how we scheme for UNC. I still believe we have the weapons to win this game, then we will get another 3 or 4 days to plan for the next round. Our seniors will step up their games. We just need some young guys to go out there and play, without over-thinking, and I truly believe we have a chance. I am still waiting for Sunday.

I see what you're saying. but it's kind of an apples to oranges comparison. Ware was a good player, but he mostly came off the bench, played some solid minutes and got them about 5 pts a game. Georges is a starter and one of the leading scorers on our offense, and adds a new dimension that other guys on the can't. It's not that Ejim, Hogue, Kane, Long, et al aren't great at what they do, it's just Georges is different. It's that different look that Fred uses to his advantage to keep the opposing defenses guessing. I think other guys will step up, they just need execute even better than before. It's not impossible, the margin for error just got smaller.

No doubt, it sucks to lose Georges but..ISU has one of the top coaches and coaching staff's in the country. In Fred we trust. Stop crying and Go Clones.
