NFL: ***Official Kansas City Chiefs Thread***

I didn't say anything about firing him after this season. You have a young, mvp quarterback and a coach known for coming up short in the playoffs. How many seasons without getting to the SB are you going to give him?

As many as they need. Who are you going to get that's a better option than Andy Reid? Even for great QB and coach it just takes time to break through. It took Peyton Manning nearly a decade. Brees and Payton chipped away at it for something like six or seven years.

Sometimes I think that the Patriots' success has kind of skewed expectations for fans. They're an outlier. For most teams it's really really hard to even get to a SB let alone win one, even with an elite QB.

This has nothing to do with the Patriots and more with my opinion of Reid. He's like 1-5 in conference championship games and 1-3 at home. Meanwhile his former assistant goes to his former team and beats the Patriots to win the Super Bowl. Reid is great at building a team, but just can't seem to get over the hump.

That's fair criticism. I've dumped on Reid as much as anyone for his postseason resume and questionable clock management. But if you get rid of him then who do you replace him with? The number of retreads and McVay wannabes out there is horrifying.

I agree with you that it's tough to know who to replace him with. Hopefully Reid gets it done and the point is moot.

A championship five years later with a different roster is hardly incriminating of Reid. And you don’t fire a coach as retribution for losses decades ago in a different organization.

Public perception tends to punish coaches that add a lot of value. How many of those Eagles teams would have reached that success with a coach other than Reid?

If the Chiefs front office can improve the defense getting to the SB will be easier with that offense. Look at some of the games last year that even an average defense would have given them wins:

Lost 43-40 @ NE
Lost 54-51 @ LA Rams
Lost 29-28 vs LA Chargers
Lost 38-31 @ Sea
Lost 37-31 in OT to NE in the playoffs

Chiefs even won several games they gave up 25+ points including 2 games they gave up 37 and 33 points.

If you go back and look at those losses closer the defensive secondary was just awful and a lot of late game collapses where they let teams just march down the field with ease with penalties and poor coverage. Teams could basically throw it on them all day and if they didn't get a completion there was a good chance they'd get a PI or defensive holding call - especially in the red zone - because the secondary was that bad. I'm hoping they can strike a trade for Jalen Ramsey as that would be a big boost to the weakest position on the roster.

I think offensively it's hard to argue there is a better team in the NFL right now, if they can get even a middle of the pack defense this year compared to last year's defense that was nearly the worst team in most defensive categories they won't need to score 30-40 a game to have a chance to win.

It was a different roster, but Pederson beat Belichick and the Patriots to win a SB. It hasn't been decades either.

Doesn't your last question kind of go with my point that Reid is great at building teams?

Being a Vikes fan in KC, I've adopted the Chiefs as my AFC team over the years and have listened to a considerable amount of fan blabber and talk radio. Since Hank Stram, Chiefs fans have had success with Marty (who many were tired of due to his conservative play calling) and **** Vermeil. But the Herm Edwards, Todd Haley and Romeo Crennel years left people starving for a winner. Reid currently has the best winning percentage of any Chiefs coach and most fans here know it.

My impression is that Reid has a long leash now that he has Mahomes. There were some grumblings when he stood by Alex Smith's conservative decision making, but I think most people have almost wiped those memories from their minds.

I think as long as the Belichick/Brady Patriots are the ones keeping the Chiefs out of the Super Bowl, Reid is safe. However, when that duo splits up, right or wrong, a Super Bowl absence is going to have people grumbling again.

I think many people overlook the weakness of having a fast scoring offense is that your defense sees the field more, and other teams have more opportunities to score

Chiefs were 1st in points and 26th in time of possession
New England was 4th in points and 2 in time of possession

New England's methodical ball control keeps their defense rested, and other teams offenses off the field.

Also, in 2018, IMO Biased opinion, Chiefs beat New England if Hunt was still playing in post season, that was a huge blow.

The Eagles beating the Patriots five years after Reid coached the Eagles isn’t at all incriminating to Reid.

You referenced Reid’s record in NFC title games in support of your contention about Reid needing a Super Bowl soon or be on the hotseat. The most recent one was 11 years ago. The first was nearly 20 years ago.

The last point is about whether Reid has underperformed. He consistently gets a collection of talent to play better than nearly anyone else could. Firing because of not winning a Super Bowl is retribution over single games in which luck is a factor, rather than making a change that improves the team.

Please take the Eagles out of the equation. Reid's former assistant beat the Patriots to win a Super Bowl a year before Reid lost to the Patiots at home in the AFC. He accomplished something in his first few years coaching that Reid hasn't been able to do.

Great points! I think the last Chiefs game I attended my have been one of Haley's last years and Arrowhead was not the same loud environment it is now. In fact there were Chiefs fans getting into it with each other in our section arguing about how horrible Haley was. So yeah true Chiefs fans who endured the bad seasons under Edwards, Haley, and Crennel are going to support Reid as long as they keep winning like they are and making the playoffs because for awhile there just making the playoffs was becoming rare. This is only Mahomes 2nd season as a starter and the defense is still a work in progress so he is going to have a long leash for now as long as the offense keeps putting up video game like numbers consistently. This team will make a SB appearance once they get the defense improved enough they can actually stop good teams in crucial situations.

Chiefs get Mo Claiborne back after next week so that should also help. He was coming off his best year last year.
Chiefs got a pretty tough stretch coming up in their next 6 games. Will be interesting to see how the D can hold up and when Hill gets cleared.

And now he just lost to the Lions at home and is 1-2 to start the year. You are comparing 2 different things. Reid has been a consistent winner and has failed in certain spots in the playoffs. You find someone that is better than him at consistently getting chances and putting teams in the spot to win SB's, and I'd take him. I don't know who that is.

You brought up Reid’s Eagle accomplishments as a negative.

Sure, let’s take them out of the equation. Reid is viewed much more favorably imo. If all anyone knew of Reid was Chiefs resume, his seat is about as cold as it can get. Any fans claiming otherwise are emotionally basing it on the outcome of one game.

How does Reid’s assistant winning a Super Bowl in a different season reflect poorly on a Reid only to be judged on his career with the Chiefs? I guess Reid looks pretty good considering how the Eagles have done since then?
