*** OFFICIAL ISU-TTU THURSDAY THREAD ***

I'm not sure how letting students in for free isn't a good thing. We've always let students in free afaik, at least it was that way back when I was in school.

Uhhhhh, what? Unless we're Texas and sending money back to the university itself, I'm not sure how that would be happening.

Any money brought into the university helps offset the operating budget of the athletic department. The athletic budget comes from tuition dollars.
We are talking peanuts here, but offering free admission to students, means they are losing a few $million in potential earnings. It's probably worth it to fill the stands in their eyes.

You're way behind the times here. The athletic budget does not include tuition dollars at all.

It's not exactly "free," it's more like every student pays for part of a ticket whether they use it or not.

I don't think it is either good or bad - I think it is amusing that it is being portrayed as a huge success for TTU in terms of attendance when in reality the rest of the story is very important.

Students get in for free? What is this UNI?

And I'd say that 82% is under reported, due to the fact we have maybe 7,000-8,000 seats allocated to students, and at most games, it's filled, and overflow in the aisles.

Its probably due to that 18% just rushing into the stadium and not getting accounted for by the ticket takers. Add in the fact that many students just buy hillsides and sit in the student section anyway and we are probably way over 100%.

Almost 8% of Iowa State's athletic budget is subsidized (As of 2011). Texas Tech is closer to 10%. The Subsidy comes from the sum of students fees, direct and indirect institutional support and state money.

What exactly do you think institutional support is?

That was 2011. I believe the AD now receives 0 money from the university.

So according to what you bolded Texas Tech can't get enough paying fans to go to the game so you let more students in for free? I wouldn't be touting that, I'd be embarrassed about that..

Actually, Tech is experiencing increased student and paid attendance at games. The new north-end seating sections and video board project is nearly complete and plans to bowl-in the south endzone are gaining steam. Tech AD Kirby Hocutt views increasing student attendance at games as a long-term investment. Basically, students who attend football games are more likely to become rabid Tech fans and then generous alumni. Pretty smart IMO.

I still laugh at the fact a BCS AQ conference school lets students in for free to football games.

Texas Tech uses the same system as Virginia Tech, TCU, Florida State, WVU, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Rutgers, South Carolina, etc., charging a single "athletic fee" for access to all Tech sports rather than charging for individual game tickets. I guess they figure the students are more likely to support Tech teams since they already paid for the privilege to attend the games.

Can't say I disagree with the philosophy. My question would be how are tickets given out? Do you have to make a request before the game? Or do you simply show up and get an ID scanned for admission?

My son received a general recruiting email from TCU. I took a virtual tour of the campus and it pointed out students just show up at a certain gate for FB and BB, show their ID or get it scanned and they can go inside and watch.

It was just a scan when I was at TTU. I assume it's the same now.
