*** Official IOWA STATE vs DePaul Game(Day) Thread ***

That's what is disappointing. I don't care what he does offensively but he was heralded as this athletic freak who was great defensively and on the boards. Watch him play he is lost of defensive and gets beat on rebounds. For someone who is billed as athletic he is unintentionally on ground alot.

Physically he might be there but he isn't processing mentally where to be or what to do.

Hope he turns it around but he is a liability right now. I know the only way for him to get better is for him to play but we have players (Watson) who should be getting more mins than him atm.

I get occassional Darlinstone Dubar flashbacks.

Just stopping by to see what you guys are still talking about in yesterday's game thread. Carry on.

He was the one guy of that recruiting class I thought should've been kept. Was an offensive rebounder as a true freshman.

That was a memorably weird recruiting class.

Walker seems like a good kid but belongs at a low-major.

Blackwell wasn't a P6 player... or a Division I player for that matter.

Foster is a monumental bust. That's enough said.

DD is the only one in the long term who might have been able to stick at this level.

No, I'm asking: how does the current team, right now, look better on defense with Watson? When has this happened? What game over the last week or more was there a sequence where Watson made a difference?

You have me debating the defensive impact of the 9/10 guys on our roster. I've watched Watson for over a season now and like his D.
Hard to tell between the 2 since we're talking guys that average 11 and 8. Omaha seems to get a lot of fouls in 11 minutes..Like I said we're debating 2 guys that will not make a significant impact this season. Both are good players off the bench..that's it. King and Milan should get most of the minutes Watson and Omaha are fighting for anyway.

My inquiry has nothing to do with Omaha.

You said the team is better defensively with Watson playing.

I'd just like to know what has happened with the current team that shows this.

What does Watson do well other than cut to the hoop? Dude has never done anything with the ball in his hands.

I still wish 'things' would have worked out with Hinson. Not pretending I know anything about that scenario tho. Not only is he a bruiser, he was 5-8 from '3' the other night. We could use a guy like him. While Tre King was better (against DePaul) he was sure limited vs. Tech and A&M.

Watson doesn't have a consistent offensive game but has shown a few flashes, namely getting to the basket and knocking down some threes (more than streaky here).

The reason you play Watson has more to do with defense, rebounding, and ability to play in transition. There is no reason Pavs should be getting minutes over Watson. At his worst he ducks at both ends and at his best he's mediocre offensively. With Ward hurt, it would really help the defensive continuity to have a guard that can guard multiple positions, get some rebounds, and convert on a few offensive opportunities.

I bet if you were able to play Pavs and Watson 15-20 mins a game, against the same opponent and compare performance Watson would win in a landslide. Pavs isn't athletic or strong enough to keep up defensively, isn't quick enough to play in transition, and is mediocre at best as an offensive threat. Many of our defensive break downs start with Pavs when he's on the floor. With Watson you get an elite defender, an adequate rebounder for his position, and someone that can give roughly the same offensive output/efficiency as Pavs. More importantly it gives you a + weak side help/rotation defender when Milan is on the floor. Having Pavsa AND Milan on the floor at the same time is a defensive nightmare.

You've outsmarted TJ again!

Sorry, had to, ZRF.
I do agree that the team isn't as good, defensively, with Pav and Milan both on the floor. I think the coaches know this and accept it for the offensive value they bring. Hard to understand why this would be your post several days after that game, in which (most) everyone else thought Pav played an important role.

You are right of course, for the most part. I am just being an armchair coach, wondering why we are only playing a 7 man rotation now.
I'd be surprised if that continues. We went with the hot lineup in the 2nd half against DePaul. You don't want to be messing around with 10-11 man rotations in real games, but we should be using 8-9 at this point in the season.

We'll see if the DePaul game is a philosophical shift to a more offensive team while sacrificing on the other end or if that was a one time thing.

Lol did you even watch the DePaul game? Pav completely changed the game with his offense in the 1st half. His defense was fine. It feels like a lot of people are taking a look at Pav and writing off his defense. He's been solid on the ball.

If you think Watson is giving us the same offensive output, you don't know ball.

There's a bunch of old ISU games on Youtube including a few of the 99-00 team.

They were far from perfect but still reign supreme as the best ever but folks like the one you quoted would dissect them as pathetic awful players that shouldn't have been getting so many minutes.
