Official Duke Postgame Thread

when he was playing and gaurding nolan, he beat him off the dribble nearly everytime it seemed. which leads to open looks for others when others have to help.

Again, not a single player was stopping dribble penetration. That how
a) we got owned on the boards
b) we blocked a ton of shots
c) Brackins got into foul trouble

I'm disappointed, but Duke is a very good team. Here's my attempt at being optimistic: Brackins played beyond terrible and we could still have been in the game had we not turned the ball over a million times. Colvin is also going to be great for us in the future.

At about 6:00 Minutes left in the second half of the Duke game, Diante Garrett threw a pass that was intercepted by Scheyer (#30) and then brought all the way to the opposite basket nearly uncontested and Scheyer layed it in and was fouled by Garrett. During the play only 2 of Iowa State players hustled down to the other end to even try to defend it. Now I know we were down by 20 or whatever, but personally I hate to watch that. I hate lack of hustle, and in all levels of basketball it is important.

But its what happened directly after the lay in and foul by Diante that really disappointed me. Seemingly all five of our on-court players met in the lane and began to literally yell at every other one. The ESPN cameras caught some of it and luckily Jay Bilas talked during the interaction, but you could still distinctly hear our players bickering and arguing, on the court, on National television. Brackins and Diante looked like the veins in their neck were going to start punching each other because they were yelling so hard. I find this embarrassing and very unprofessional. I realize that it was the most frustrating game of the season thus far for us and especially our players, but there is a time and place for argument and it is not in the free throw lane on ESPN.

Did anyone else see/notice this?

And finally I ask if this is just pure frustration from our players, or could there be a little rift in our team chemistry?

Wasn't as bad as it could've been.

I'm just so sick of losing. I wish I still had a fire in me that would lead me to be upset and disappointed about this game. But I'm not. Again, I am not feeling down about this loss. I used to be so involved in these games. I hate the apathy that's setting in and has been setting in.

I really want to go to the NCAA Tournament again. I just wanna be, I just wanna be, I just wanna be successful. Lol. But seriously, I really want to be "back".

As we look back on this game, we will see Scheyer's great shooting, Brackins lack of good shot selection, turnovers, and no go-to 3 shooter.

All, except the first one, are things that we have seen in other games. So, while we didn't put it together tonight, we still have it. Now, we just have to learn from it and get back to doing the other things.

Also, I wonder how much the outcome was determined in the first few minutes? If we had started out even or on top, it might have been a different game because we would have had more confidence and they would have had to open up their defense.

I was mildly surprised with tonight's game. I expected it to be a lot worse. DG was hot and cold, as was Colvin, Ham was good, Gilstrap was OK, Brackins had a tough night, but not at all his fault. Duke was definitely denying him everything and made other players score to beat them. I felt we did a lot of growing up tonight and it can only help when Big XII play begins.

Is everyone who is claiming we are going to be fine going to be happy with the NIT?

I'm not concerned with NIT, I just want to see improvement from game to game.

Rebounding continues to be an issue but the guys played with some serious fire for the first time after the first timeout in the first half.

i was impressed with the little burst chirstopherson provided coming off the bench in the 1st half

yeah, chirstopherson seemed to play pretty well tonight. I think he will do some great things for us in the future. In general, the PGs did okay. The team just seemed to have their minds elsewhere. They looked slow and unresponsive and when they did try to speed things up, only their bodies moved faster, their brains got left behind.

Agree - Lucca is by far the weakest defensive link. Watch him - he will actually back off his man if that player drives in to the basket. He'll wave his arns at him, or try to take a swipe at the ball, but he never bodies up.

You think it's possible that they were just frustrated, or that they had to yell to be heard over the crowd? But continue with the soap opera theory if you must.

other players were getting picked and not being able to fight through, while it appears that picks arn't even necessary when lucca is defending. don't get me wrong, he is an important part of this team, but as an earlier poster mentioned, his role might be shifting away from a starter logging major minutes to sharing some of those with chirstopherson, etc once big 12 play hits and the level of athletiscm increases

This is the future. It's year 5.

Yeah, losing Gilstrap and Brackins next year means starting to rebuild, again. I have no idea where the scoring comes from next year. The two toughest teams on the schedule (Cal and Duke) have hammered the Clones. Two fairly even teams (UNI and NW) beat them. I don't think it bodes well for conference play. And if McDermott can't figure it out with Gilstrap and Brackins.......next year figures to be pretty ugly.

Wait, so we need to ***** that the guys show no emotion, and then when the guys that need to be leaders are exerting themselves over the rest of the team it's embarassing?

I don't even know how to feel anymore.

Hold me

Wow, another HORRIBLE offensive game against an above average defensive opponent for McD. Seriously his "system" only works against teams that don't like to play D. Against an above average to good team it looks like the Washington Generals out there.

As usual, the ISU games just aren't fun to watch. No hustle, no reboundings. Both things that again are pretty standard in McD's tenure. Oh well, I'm getting used to it now. Anyone that says that this team is going to the NIT is kidding themselves.

Just be patient. It takes McDermott 10 years to get his players and system in place!:jimlad:

I really like what he did at UNI and I think we are starting to see it here. The next week or so may show us whether the team stays together and runs the plan. I predict that they will and we will be pleased by the end of the season. We won't win the Big 12, but I can still see us making the NCAA tourney.

I had turned the game off in frustration. I just couldn't endure the blowout. But, didn't we fire Morgan for precisely this sort of thing? Players bickering and fighting with each other, lack of team chemistry, etc.
