So, how warm is it in Minneapolis in the dead of winter in January?

Snapped this photo when this rowing shell from the University of Minnesota caught my eye today. River should be frozen over. Last think you expect is a racing shell with rowers with their shirts off.

This really reminds me of the 90s when it would be little snow and I could walk to work in a light jacket during the coldest times even.

2 weeks of bitter cold. Then a week of near record highs. Late February will be wild. I'm guessing another huge snow storm or two.
I can almost guarantee that's when the cold will return. It'll be nice the week I'm in FL and then will be greeted with a return to reality the last week when we're back again. Probably lasting in to mid March. Me traveling anywhere warm in winter to escape cold is the same effect as buying a new snowblower.

I'd guess 2-3 snow storms through March.

The good news is it won't be around long. I'm seeing lots of actual mud so the ground must have thawed a bit.

Crazy how much snow we had in January and how little snow Minneapolis has had.

Also crazy that there is still snow sitting around after so many days of warm weather.

I don't think the ground really froze. It never got super cold until after snow storm #2. I think the snow from the 1st storm insulated the ground and this is soaking in. My back yard is a mud pit right now.

How dare you say that on Feb 1... You have now doomed my chances to golf in March

Honestly though I always feel like getting through January is the hardest part.

We still usually get some snow in february\early march, but usually less of the bitter cold and melting isn't far away. Plus given the longer-term forecasts of above-average temps for the next couple weeks, even if it takes a turn it seems likelier for the back half of february.

Yeah there is all of that...the grass is green and it was above average before the cold snap.
