Haven't been out, but judging by the chairs on my deck....lotta freaking snow just south of Ames. 8 inches probably?
Hard to guess what we've had in Indianola so far. My back patio seemed to be about 5" deep, but snow swirls around and over the house. Bottom layer was heavy and wet, top is fluffy
Why on earth would you do a pre-shovel if you have a snow blower?! I have a crappy single stage and it does fine up to 8-10", can't imagine why anyone would pre-shovel when you have one - at 3am no less!
Meanwhile, my **** of a neighbor fired up his snow blower at 5 am, then proceeded to go back inside/shut the garage/all lights off. Why TF would anyone do that..? Him and his wife WFH and school is cancelled.
Sounds exactly like my neighbor who has to be the first every snow to clear his drive. And he is retired and has no kids.
Van Buren county less than 2, predicted 6-10 overnight and 3-5 today. Bust at this point in time, choreing will be much better than expected this morning.

Well, somehow I think I had as much snow between the time I shoveled at 5 am and again at 6:45 as I had overnight (based on the back patio anyway). HUGE flakes coming down heavy
5 AM seems reasonable for those that have to work early. They put headlights on those things for a reason. Clear the driveway, come back in and get showered, be ready for your day by 6:30 to 7:00. Not everyone starts their day at 8:00.
Drove from Johnston to downtown at 5:30 this morning. Not bad if you take it slow. I saw one car in the ditch and that was it. Not a lot of idiots, besides the person driving 20 mph in the far left lane with their hazards on.
