***Official 2023 Weather Thread***

WHO said 95 and humid on Wednesday next week. One day registered for RAGBRAI on Wednesday. FML!! Plus first RAGBRAI ride for the majority of our group. I know of at a least three that will not make it to the end.

Be careful. The heat can sneak up on some people without them being totally aware. Spoken by a guy who who had to go to the ER to find a running companion after a 10K race. Started to get worried when she didn't show up at the finish. Turned out she had heat stroke and was ambulanced to the hospital. She was okay but pretty scary. I got too hot in the race but could sense "Not good, Boxster" and slowed to a crawl for a bit.

M-F next week for Des Moines according to Weather Underground:

Not surprised! My birthday is Sunday and every year when my parents call to wish me a happy birthday, I get to hear how hot it was the day I was born. So hot that the only place in the hospital with air conditioning was the OR/delivery room and they actually let my dad in the room instead of making him sit out in the waiting room - which was the standard back then. Three years later when my sister was born - same hospital - they tried to make him sit in the waiting room. He argued with them and they finally let him stand and watch through the OR door window.

(For those of you trying to figure out how long ago that was. I'll be 58 this year. The only age that has ever bothered me was 20 because I was no longer had an excuse of being a teenager!)

Damnit. Thread made me check next week forecast. 98 for Wednesday in Mpls. Of course, that's the day our local alumni group scheduled an afterwork social bike ride. I wasn't worried about rain and somewhat worried about air quality but had not thought 98.

The weather gods hate me. Got a whooping .05" out of the storms last night and now in a severe thunder boomer watch. Bet we get wind and hail and less than a 10th of rain cause 2023.

One of my sons was a lifeguard when RAGBRAI came through town and had to be at the pool at 6:00 am, as that was a place bikers could shower. We kind of wondered if anyone would be there that early, but there were several waiting for him. I guess starting out before sunrise is not a bad plan if it is going to be scorching hot.

He worked 6:00 am to midnight that day. Disinfecting the showers was a revolting job. When he was on the guard stand, he thought it would be impossible to see anyone on the bottom.

The yr I rode I usually started between 530 and 6 was almost always done by 2 or 3. That was leisurely riding for the most part.

I always got up at 5 or even earlier if it was a long, hot day. Tried to be on the road before 6. Done by noon many days. Lines for most things would be short. Set up the tent and find the local pool during the afternoon.

That makes sense. These were people who started somewhere else and got to our town by 6:00 am. It was the short day of the ride that day though. Still it’s southern Iowa and hills.

Someone died from a heart attack the next day leaving our town. They were fairly close to the next overnight when it happened.

If you guys wanna feel better about your heat wave.

I live in the Phoenix Metro. We are setting records that no one wants to set.

Been reading about that. Woof, aren't you closing in on 30 days of 100+?

Plus yours is a "dry" heat.;)

Yeah, haven't seen a real cloud since April.

I hear the "Dry" heat excuse all the time. Man, when its 110+, its 110. Dry heat only applies when its like... 90 outside. Then it really isn't as hot as say 90 in Iowa. (Born and raised Iowa, moved down here.... 8 years ago)
