***Official 2023 Weather Thread***

Alliant guys are probably making $100/hr plus right now, but have to deal with the weather.
My uncle was a linesman it's apparently super dangerous especially back in the 70s and 80s. He shattered both his shins in an accident and he says he's 3 inches shorter now. But the settlement paid for his college.

My boss's other son is one. They do monthly tests to practice rescuing someone who falls out of the bucket and is hanging by the harness. They also have their line gloves air tested for holes weekly.

For service calls after hours, the on call person gets minimum 3 hours of triple time, no matter what it is.

Yeah my guess is maybe they didn't have "Blizzard Warning" in their particular toolbox until then maybe?

I think Des Moines only recently starting using Red Flag Warnings, or one of the Fire Weather products, that back in the day would have just been mentioned in Wind Advisory text.

Bunch of others have been axed and are defunct. Growing up in addition to winter storm there was
Snow Advisory
Blowing Snow Advisory
Snow and Blowing Snow Advisory (i think)
Freezing Rain Advisory (notch below Ice Storm Warning)

They've all been collapsed into just Winter Weather Advisory now.

Soon enough even the Winter Weather Advisory will be gone due to it being "confusing". I suspect it's rollout will be about as well done as the "new" radar display product the NWS introduced, as in it will be terrible and inferior to what came before.

Annnnnndd daycare closed tomorrow. Pray for us. They closed before the school district. Does my oldest still have 4k????? This is at least 4 daycare closures/early closings this winter. There had been.....maybe 1 closure and one early closing in the prior 4 years.

I see some delays out there already for tomorrow morning...this going to get bad enough to delay everyone?

That new radar is trash.

Made it from Newton to Des Moines to Roland to Ames to Nevada to Baxter and back to Newton ok. Roads were fine except in Nevada where it was pure ice.

My clients appreciate that I come to them and work around their schedules. I consider it my niche, I am not the CPA you have to make an appointment to drop stuff off to.
I’m just playing as you know, I’m sure they appreciate the personal service.

Southeast and South-central parts of the state are still fine, we are just getting rain, and the temp is supposed to stay above freezing tonight, SW part of the state will see some ice. Looks like about Warren county to the South should be generally fine, except over by Creston.

Icy in north central Iowa, not much snow though can still see the grass poking through it. Sidewalks and parking lots terrible slick though.

Bit of a bust here in Albert Lea, both snowfall and wind. May not even bother to plow the drive. The named the storm - potentially an all-time doozy - Olive. I'd suggest Cam Lard.
