I've done this 3 times with different insurance carriers. State Farm inspector had no problem with having a contractor there, the Westbend inspector was not happy at all, but inspected with him there. The Westbend inspector was going to sweep a bunch of stuff under the rug, but the contractor made him take note and were added to the estimate.
My issue isn't so much with State Farm trying to sleep things under the rug, for the most part. The damaged items match pretty closely. My issue is that they are trying to completely lowball the actual replacement cost of the damaged parts. The roof itself is almost $4k difference.

Exactly

Smoke is quite thick at the surface behind this front. Most everyone will notice. Seeing about 2-4 miles visibility up near the border and into SE Minnesota.

I could even smell it when I stepped outside.

Unless he has replacement value.
For the first 15 years of the roof (20 with a couple companies). Depreciating schedule after the roof's expected life.

Hell, we're at the point where there are some companies that will give you a significant discount if your agree to an actual cash value settlement starting in roof year 3.

Frankly, everyone should go to metal roofs. They're practically indestructible.

Our insurance company has never said anything like that. We were 19 when it was damaged and 100% taken care of.

I'm glad that happened for you. Worked out well on your end.

I don't have a carrier that goes more than 15 years anymore and I think there's going to be a lot more scrutiny going forward. Insurance companies can't continue to replace people's older roofs and stay solvent. It sucks and it's getting harder and harder to place homes that aren't either fairly new or in immaculate shape.

Replacement cost was quite a bit higher when we built. The agent has replacement on nearly everything I have for building and nearly all are in the 20-25 year area. Why would insurance companies charge extra for it and then not take care of it?

Absolutely. Its really not that much more expensive, at least on the 2 roofs we've done - her old house post-derecho, and our new place. Now those were both fairly simple roofs, and they just went over the old shingles with the steel. But for us, maybe 20% above shingle cost. And we get a discount on the house insurance, and likely never worry about it again.
