***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

When was the last time there was a 3 team trade in MLB? It happens all the time in the NBA due to the salary cap and need for a team with cap room to absorb a contract but that's not a factor in the MLB
They’re fairly common but are typically only swaps with small names.

Last big one I remember was just last offseason.

Braves got Sean Murphy from the A’s
Brewers got William Contreras from the Braves
A’s got a bunch of prospects from both teams

Starting to think the Cubs aren't interested in bringing him back which I think I'm OK with that. His hard contact rate analytics make you wonder if they caught lightning in a bottle with him in 2023 and he can't sustain that and have the same kind of production over the long term. Think Jason Heyward here but not quite that extreme. Heyward was coming off a 6.5 WAR year with the Cardinals where he hit .293 but it never carried over or came close to that as a Cub. Front office may be a little gun shy giving him a long term deal at the price Boras is asking.

If they don't get Ohtani not sure where they go next to acquire a big bat. There just is not much available in free agency and at the moment the biggest names in the trade market are 1 year rentals that you don't want to spend too much prospect capital on. I don't see the Cubs shelling out the money it would take to sign Soto after this season so unless its a very reasonable trade deal I don't see them acquiring him. Hoping there is something behind the Bichette rumors as could have him under control for a reasonable salary through 2025 and he could fill a big need at 3B. I have a feeling there is going to be an under the radar big trade before spring training involving the Cubs if they don't land some of the big names being talked about right now.

maybe a "cubs are being too cheap but i would like to go see if we can get them to raise the price."

No, this isn't the WGN Cubs here. When they grabbed Counsel they tipped their cap. I doubt money in and of itself is the limiting factor for Ohtani..

I don’t hate letting Ohtani go if he pushes $600 MM like is being speculated given we don’t know what he’ll be when he comes back to pitching.

However, if we are out on the Ohtani market, we NEED to start grabbing guys now instead of waiting for the losers in the Ohtani market to start making moves
Hopefully plan B is ready to go. Yamamoto and Hoskins would be my first two. Each only cost money. Then another bat, Bichette would be a perfect fit as long as we can keep Horton.

If the Blue Jays sign Ohtani, they aren't trading Bichette so we're still stuck in the forever waiting game.

Yammamoto has to be priority 1 at this point.

Starting to feel like the shortstop market last off season (which worked out decently, I suppose, but still...)

Sounds like Red Sox and Mets making hard push for him. Price may be up to $275-$300 million now.

He's only 25 so I don't think an 8 year deal is crazy for that profile. 8 years/$300 shouldn't age that poorly if you're only paying him until he's 32/33.

Been an exhilarating afternoon. Sounds like Jed scolded Nightengale after his meeting with the press.

Jed also made it sound like nothing exciting is going to happen for the franchise during the Winter Meetings.

Seems like we’re taking the wait and see aproach a la Dansby. I do think Jed knows what he’s doing, but I look at our roster now and hate what I see.

Well duh to the highlighted part when virtually nothing has happened this offseason while the whole league waits on Ohtani. Give it time

Puffing our chests like we are going to be big spenders only to go cheap and claim the market was out of control. Rinse and repeat from last year.

Holy **** is that an over reaction. So we’re hearing we’re likely not going to get Ohtani, which was always the most likely outcome regardless of money. And we’re probably not throwing $300mil at a rookie pitcher in Yamamoto. So that means it’s all over lol good lord
