***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

I was hoping that Atlanta would have pretty much everything locked up by the time we played them in the last week but they have struggled a bit (for them) lately and now they are only 2 games ahead of Baltimore for best record in the baseball and just 3 games of Dodgers for best in NL.

This all goes back to the FO. They've played really good baseball the second 1/2 and periods of struggle happen. But we put ourselves so far behind the 8-ball with a non-competitive roster in the first half that we are left with this.

Wait a minute. It sounds like you're saying that it's important to be competitive all season and not take the first half off.

This is the kind of take that wears me out. You can't just spend and spend and buy a championship. Moves like that kill rosters. Look at Heyward ( still paying) look at Darvish. The FO targeted the leader and got him. No one seriously thought this team was ready to do anymore then they have. This year they'll get the pieces to allow them to compete with the big boys. But they aren't going to spend just to spend.

Just curious, who should they of added last winter in your eyes?

Let's not be too tough on him, he's still a 4.5 WAR on the season which is 2nd on the team to Hoerner at 4.9 and just above Bellinger's 4.3 and that is still 6th best amongst all MLB SS. Look at the other guys that got paid more than him this offseason Bogaerts 4.2 Turner 3.6 Correa 1.4 He's 5th at the position for RBI, 11 more than any of those 3 guys with Correa being the closest. He's also the top defensive WAR at SS too. For his first year I was not expecting him to replicate last season but it's still been the 2nd best season of his career. He's been the best bang for the buck out of the 4 free agent SS in the offseason so I'm not disappointed with him.

We can nitpick on him all we want but he's hardly the reason behind the struggles of this team. Not having good production from 1B and 3B for a majority of the year along with bullpen issues and some problems in the rotation too is the biggest thing holding this team back. Happ and Suzuki also had some bad cold spells at times this year too. The right moves in the offseason should shore a lot of that up if the front office navigates the offseason market reasonably along with the prospects that will be making their way to Chicago at some point too.
Totally agree, I love what he’s provided. However, his play has shown he could use a breather. He can’t ever get one

Better off telling you what I don’t want - I don’t want to go into a season where we have our fingers crossed that the guy we have marked there opening day can hold the fort down all season.

You look at every bad team we’ve had since 2019, we’ve had holes at at least 2 positions where the FO hopes a guy will pan out

I don’t hate Shaw being there eventually, but I hate going into a season thinking he’ll be “the guy” until he proves he can be trusted as “the guy”
But every roster has holes/risk. No issue, they bat bottom of order. The error of Cubs FO was relying on 2 month wonders to be core players.

A lot of Cubs direction in FA depends on resigning Bellinger AND his role. Is he mostly CF, mostly 1B or a 50/50 split. If he is willing to split positions, that might be ideal for development of young guys like Crow-Armstrong, Mevis, Canario ...

I have no faith in the FO re-signing Bellinger.

Exact same lineup as last night. You have to wonder if they told him.his job is on the line or he's just an *******.
I’ve seen more and more non-Chicago/Cubs media start speculating this.

Though I do feel like 7 runs should be enough to beat the sorry Pirates
