No need. His is a mutual option, and if he keeps this up, there's zero chance he takes one extra year at $25M over what he'll get in FA.

His base is 12 this year and if they don't agree on the mutual for next year they owe him 5.5 mil.
It's a mutual option, Bellinger will get a bigger long term deal if he keeps playing like he has so far so just enjoy him while we have him. If it weren't for all the OF prospects in the system and needing payroll to make a run at Ohtani I'd be all in for extending him now.

Amaya will not have options next year. Gomes will be the one they keep. Barnhart will be odd man out unless they choose to let Amaya go. Which they won't.

No, he won't. The buyout is only paid if the club opts out of the remaining year(s). There is no buyout when the player elects FA, which is what Bellinger will (in all likelihood) do.

Cardinals management and ownership deserves plenty of blame for Cardinals pitching problems too. Matz has been terrible since they signed him. Flaherty hasn't started 20 games since 2019 then Wainwright is now 40 years old and St Louis somehow ignored all of this in the offseason.

One would logically expect the team to pay the buyout if it wants to avoid paying even more for an extra season, but it makes no sense for them to pay it if they want to keep the player and the player declines. Why would I have done that, when the issue was apparently a fundamental misunderstanding of how a MO works? I made an assumption that was logically sound, and I was apparently wrong. Do you want a hug and a kiss to make up, or would you rather cry a little longer about someone saying that you were wrong on the internet?
They should probably figure out a way to get him in Chicago and get him on the field as much as possible IMO. Agree with the Zobrist comparison.
Admittedly I haven’t watched a lot of baseball in the last 2 years, I forgot that MLB implemented the JV softball extra inning rules until today. It really destroyed the game for me. Call me old school but I lost all interest when I saw runners on second to start the inning.
Its stupid but most, if not all, mutual options are designed this way. There are many different financial reasons to do so. It is a way to guarantee extra money in the final year (positive for player) without that money impacting the current year (positive for team)
In Bellingers case, it was reported as a 1 year, $17.5 million deal. In actuality, he signed a 2 year, $24 million deal with a $5.5 million buyout after the first year. If he declines the option. He just needs a $6.5 million deal to match what he would’ve done, and he certainly will surpass that.
Rarely do I ever look at these deals and think they benefit the team but we saw a weird instance on this current team.
Drew Smyly declined a $10 million mutual option last year and we had to pay him $1 million. He then signed a $19 million over 2 year deal. He is making $8 million this year on the new contract, + $1 million from when he declined, which is less money then he would’ve received if he agreed to the option annually, but more money in terms of length of contract. Interestingly enough, the new contrast is also a mutual option in which the 3rd year is worth $10 million or $2.5 million buyout.
To me it's about pitching. Granted this one wound up still going 14, but these long, extra inning games can destroy a bullpen. I can understand wanting to try to get a game wrapped up.

kinda depends on how well you think he ages. I think the Cubs were smart to move on.
Considering that was the best contract he could get on the open market, seems many other teams agree.
One thing I'll be looking at is the STL staff ERA next year as compared to the last few years and the Cubs staff ERA compared to the last few years.
My belief is Contreras was so bad at game management that he made a noticeable difference in how many runs the Cubs gave up.
