Parking on the shoulder under a bridge to avoid driving in the hail.
Because you're not supposed to do that because it can cause bigger issues like pileups.
I get that in theory that is why but as long as they were stopped on the shoulder there is nothing wrong with it. I don't watch KCCI news unless its the only thing on and the few times I have seen Chris on air he just comes off as a tool.
But the problem is it usually doesn't stop at just the shoulder. It tends to create a chain reaction that stops traffic in all lanes. And this also makes it more difficult for emergency vehicles to move through when necessary.
Oh I agree. If however you are driving through a surprise hailstorm and all of a sudden what's in front of you becomes a problem, then yeah....you are going too fast and it can cause a pileup.
Not unlike the people who drive 75 mph in a blizzard and scratch their heads why they couldn't get stopped for that stuck pickup right in front of them.
In other words those who slow down or stop under these conditions aren't the problem. We all slow down or stop during rush hour or for an accident right? But not a hailstorm or blizzard?
Now toolbox Chris is showing car windows that were shattered driving in the storm. Yeah toolbox Chris.....I'm selfish for not wanting my windshield shattered while I drive.
It's too bad not everyone can get under an overpass during these situations so broken windshields can be avoided. But if you get caught in one of these and can't under a pass......stop. Better a hailstone hits a stationary object than one moving.
As someone who drives 235 everyday, I can confirm. Whether it's a stalled vehicle in perfect weather or a vehicle pulled over in a driving rain storm, a vehcile on the shoulder inevitably leads to all three lanes being at a standstill until past the vehicle. So you go from 60 mph to 10 back to 60 in the span of a half mile.
Yes. Because the potential dangers are much worse than a shattered windshield. Slow down, hit the hazards, pull off the interstate if you need to (like, off the interstate entirely, not onto the shoulder), but don't stop under an overpass
Yep. Every time I get backed up on the freeway I expect to come up on some big wreck and then when I get there it’s a car with a flat tire on the shoulder that shouldn’t affect any lanes of traffic, but it always backs it up somehow.
Your weird obsession with this Chris guy aside, you still shouldn't pull off under an overpass, get off at the next exit maybe and find a gas station or something.
EDIT: Fourth downpour. At the fairgrounds in Des Moines we’re on at least the third downpour. First, closer to 3 pm had a short spell of hail, but nothing like what’s reported in West Des Moines. Friend called to say it’s 82, sunny and hot in Ames.
Coworker had a friend send her a pic of funnel cloud in Waukee. Thin little rope that didn't quite touch down.
Golf ball and larger hail in the 42nd and Westown area when the first storm rolled through. Tons of cars windows shattered. Mine stayed intact but is going to need to be replaced along with the moon roof. My hood looks like a drunk ex took a hammer to it. Between 2-3 inches of rain at my house to the southeast of there. Less hail. My son's car outside only took a couple of hits. House survived with only a couple window well covers getting shattered.
From 60th & Westown
I parked under a tree this morning, so no windows cracked. But, I drive a POS 2006 Ford Taurus, so I'm not really caring about the cosmetics.
Did you put comp on it as soon as you saw the first hail stone? Could you also run out and catch one and give us a picture? Those on the ground may have melted some.
