Yeah…in our neck of the woods (I’m close to Altoona), I’m starting to feel like something major needs to happen for this to be anything other than a dud. I realize a lot can happen between now and tomorrow morning, but…

Winter storms aren’t monoliths across giant swaths of real estate, just like severe thunderstorms. Look at the radar and notice the pockets of intense snow that you could drive to in 20 minutes, but may not touch your specific pin drop on a map.

it was never supposed to start until right about now. The morning stuff wasn’t part of the big storm.

This is the wimpiest snowstorm ever so far. Almost 3 pm and DM area schools could have easily gone today.

NWS still at 10.1". There is a large pocket of rain now NW of DSM.

Edit: WU up to 6.8" @ 2:46 PM.

I was in Des Moines all morning and the contrast between Des Moines and home is pretty big. The roads all the way home (I80) was just wet but once I got on the gravel road to my house it was snow. I have probably 2-3" covering my driveway so far and the yard is all covered. Compare that to seeing no accumulation on my way home. My guess is the gravel roads are cooler and much less traveled than the pavement making it stick.

It is coming down pretty hard here with big flakes too.
