***Official 2022 Transfer Thread***

I’m hoping for Green, Council, Holmes and Bates.

We can’t pay Kyle Green a bonus for landing a top recruit? Do that now to get 14 players and a better roster? That’s what raises are for right?

With all the stuff going on, if we’re not willing to go use that advantage, we should just fold now.
Pretty optimistic. I could certainly be happy with that. Problem is, I doubt they all are free.

Well I wasn't. Referring to last year's offensive struggles only.
I know you were. But as I’m alluding to, we’ve had good teams without low post threats as good as Bates. Last year included.

A front court of Bates, Ward, Kunc, King, Jones, and Watson would be considerably more talented and versatile than what we played last year.

I’m more concerned with landing players for the backcourt. We need two of AJG, Council, Eric Hunter, and Holmes. There are other options too if we miss.

We have a lot to sell on the court, and that still matters, although this may be the last offseason for that

Green apparently makes ~$300K. It is not totally unreasonable to think his son could have offers to make more than him next year.

ISU isn’t going to match the combined earning potential in salary.

Let’s see if I have the hang of how things work ‘round here:

Time to start sweating Coach Green getting poached to go coach his son at Duke!

If that happens, dad better get a nice Christmas present. A t-shirt ain't gonna cut it.

In that scenario we’re paying Green something. I don’t see Hunter or Holmes being more than Williams. Council isn’t more than we were willing to pay IB. Add in basketball role and we have a chance

On the open market, I’d guess the combo could make $1 million or more. Particularly at a P6 with a first year head coach looking to jump start.

After this year’s defense, Kyle could get a raise last 300k regardless. Add in some for the leverage he has, $500k isn’t unreasonable. AJ likely around that.

The value in the ability to circumvent scholarships with coach’s kids isn’t what it once was, but it’s still easier to have it be AD funds if the money is going to a coach.

You just keep spewing this crap out fact is you have no idea how that team would gel.
No ****. I'm obviously talking about talent wise. I'm not sure why this seems to be an issue when there's 100s of posts claiming what we'll be every offseason consistently.

Would you rather me just say we're ****** forever and will be the DePaul of the Big 12 because we can't buy every player out there? Those are significantly more annoying

Always seems to be the same group of people panicking the moment adversity strikes. Must suck to be that way.
I'm sure I panicked a lot years ago but as I age I "think" I'm definitely doing that less.
Like the NIL stuff, being a premium member, donating to Cyclone Club, no one is right or wrong just don't be a doosh to someone else for having an opinion that works for them financially.
Hell, I hope to be able to drop $10k on a Maui tournament trip in a couple years.

Well - I like your optimism. I do think you are way overestimating our ability to pay. We don ‘t have mega donors and it appears our fan base is not very receptive to the idea.

Pay to play for a guy like Council is still below mega donor right now. Hunter at KU only $500k. My guess is Council would be $200k tops. We can do that. Add in basketball side and we likely can compete a little past that.

This may well be the last transfer recruiting cycle in which we can. Every cycle is an escalation. Nearly every announced deal. An Employment ruling in NCAA vs Johnson, and rosters will quickly be 7 figures. We’d be wise to finance that.

I think Hunter and Isheem Young transferring, for what appears to be NIL reasons, has turned off some Iowa State fans to the whole idea. If Tyrese Hunter is still here, and a guy like Johni Broome or KJ Williams is available for a reasonable price, then I think fans would be more willing to open the pocketbook.

I have no idea what dollars we will be able to raise, but I will be shocked if it is anywhere near $1M for all sports. Shocked! At best I see us being able to add some “sweeteners” to some student athletes. I sincerely doubt we are going to be able to participate in buying $100K+ players. This discussion has not even touched on football. I will not give up - but eventually we must determine what’s really possible.

Right now we can get guys like Council. It’s just too cheap of cost given the impact one player can have in basketball. The reason not to is there are still basically free players not that dissimilar.

It will be seven figures roster costs in the high majors. We will have to do similar. That likely entails better AD spending, austerity, and borrowing. It’s more of a revenue generator than the hundreds of millions spent on non-players over the decades. Non-revenues will be zero. Educational opportunities (scholarships) are still equitable.

We need this to all be a step change and chaos imo. That results in some chance of market corrections occurring before we’re suffocated. A slow transition will not be favorable

We’ll have to consider the nuclear option too, which is doing a Pollard and Light type lease of university assets, but of the revenue programs. Maybe even AD

Only $500k? What a deal....
An annual $2.5 million for an elite starting lineup would not be that high. We would borrow to do that if needed. Huge ROI. Top level basketball and top branding for just $2.5 million. Plus revenue growth.

That will get KUs inclusion in the P2. And it’s not that far from their recruiting budgets and inflated coaching salaries due to recruiting.

The issue is it’s 2.5 million only right now. Every recruit it goes up. I don’t know where it stops, but given these TV deals, and what top programs make on basketball, 8 figures is not unlikely. There’s a lot riding on KU basketball. There are also a lot of committed fans and donors that will pay.

What are you talking about? This has nothing to do with the AD.
