I see your point. But he played for one the top prep programs in the nation. Every program with a pulse saw him play and hardly anyone offered until the now when teams are scrambling to fill their roster.

Matt Thomas was a pretty big disappoinment his first two years. Thank God Fred got rid of him...

I respect that opinion but I have the counter argument.
Grill was forced to play early as a freshman on a poor ISU team. He was late to focusing on basketball and could have used a RS to refine his skills. Even then late in the year started to show flashes of being a contributor. He was a top 150 recruit out of HS with multiple P6 offers based on potential of how he’d develop as 4 year player. I am confident that if TJ offers him he believes he’s can reach that potential as a junior. Adding Grill is also adding a player who knows TJs system and can help the other players get onboard with expectations. There are a number open roster spots, not everyone needs to be filled with an all big 12 player to be useful to the team. You can also look Junior Caleb as the soph Dunbar replacement which is an upgrade in my opinion.

Not to mention this past year doesn’t count so Grill is a sophomore again.

I still think Tre is better than Grill, but I’ll take Caleb back as I love his potential. Both struggled as a result of lack of pg during their freshman and sophomore years (after Halliburton went out obviously). Both had injuries that really affected them, granted Caleb’s was freshman year and Tre had one both years (broken nose then sprained knee). Main reason I like Tre more is his defensive skills. They aren’t too different of players. Caleb has the height advantage so I’d say his potential is probably higher. Love the energy both play with though
 
I was always impressed with how tough Grill played, even raw at times. Agree that a RS year would have benefited him. I would be curious to see how he fares a second time with more experience and a new staff.

I feel like Grills ceiling as an upperclassman is similar to Matt Mooney at Tech. Not the star, or as flashy as guys like Culver, Odiase or Moretti, but still an important role player and served as the grown man on the court.

If he is coming back, will be paying attention to see how well he develops next year.

Play, and was forced into a role that most freshman would struggle in.

Yeah, there are a lot of possible angles to it. Overall, he seemed like a guy who can shoot and contribute. We need those things right now.
And really, anyone who doesn't think there's a 1000% chance that he comes here again is fooling themselves.

He played on a team that let nixon shoot 10+ times a game, i feel like if grill could hit the water from a boat he would have looked pretty competent.

Totally possible. I'm not sure if I'm in acceptance or resignation on this one. I think he might be able to contribute, not like a star or anything, but a contributor for a few well-placed minutes per game, maybe.
