MLB: ***Official 2018 Chicago Cubs Season Thread***

I know it is hard to totally overhaul a swing, but I wonder what would happen if he totally reworked it during an off season and got rid of that rhythmic spasm he has while awaiting the pitch. It seems to me that stillness would help with inaccuracies of swing but I guess a lot of batters have success despite twirling the barrel of the bat while awaiting the pitch.

He supposedly tried that last offseason and obviously it didn't work. And what makes his struggles worse is that he's getting pitched almost like a pitcher, at one point last year he had seen the highest percentage of fastballs of any non-pitcher. Guys weren't even trying to fool him, they knew they could just throw it by him and he couldn't make them pay.

They were second in the MLB in walks last year, they still do that. Their offense was also better in nearly every category last year than in 2016.
You have a pretty good point however the Cubs were 4th in baseball for pitches per AB in 2016. Last year they were 16th. It may be a difference on how opposing teams are pitching to them, but it was definitely different.

I don't see Heyward opting out but Bleacher Nation did bring up the possibility of restructuring his contract.

He's currently 28 years old and his contract will be up at 33~34. I could see the Cubs offering to add an extension in which they can relieve some of the salary over the next 5 years.

I'll have to read the article but that seems like doubling down on a mistake. I mean if this is prime Jason Heyward, do we really want to be paying any amount of money to 35 year old, physically declining Jason Heyward?
