About 20 years ago, I told the recruiter that I was 95% sure I was going to take a job in Chicago. I turned it down. Hoping Fred is only 95% sure like I was and not 100% sure. He can be dissuaded.

I do wonder a little bit about Pollard's relationship with Hoiberg. Beyond the Palo thing, Pollard's been one of the most outspoken ADs regarding student-athlete benefits, most recently coming out for freshman ineligibility. I realize it's a tough job being an AD at a smaller school in a power conference, but I wouldn't be surprised if Pollard's penchant to air his thoughts publicly doesn't sit well with (former student athlete) Hoiberg and other ISU coaches. Recruits see his tweets (they've even been aired on Sportscenter), they're going to know what's up.

I don't necessarily disagree with Pollard's positions, and I think he's done a great job working the phones and upgrading facilities... I don't want to come off as "Fire JP" if Hoiberg leaves. But it does seem at least plausible that an "annoying boss" could be (not is) one of those things that has diminished ISU MBB head coach to something less than a dream job for Hoiberg.

People putting potential blame on Pollard are nuts. Pollard isn't the reason ISU is "less than a dream job for Hoiberg". There is a reason Hoiberg had a smaller buyout in his contract for an NBA job. It's because the NBA is his dream job!

If this was a normal coach hire, where the NBA guy is fired, replacement is contacted, then commits, I could see a guy like Fred, who has strong ties to previous job, backing out at the last second, and returning to his school. Billy Donovan did this a few years back with Orlando, and Dana Altman did it with Arkansas, ultimately returning to Creighton.

That said, I think Fred has had ample time to think this one over.

Or because he has some interest in it someday. Someday for something very special came really quick though and the special clearly got less special. My guess is 3 things added to that more than anything Pollard did:
1. BDJ situation. Negotiating a truce with neighbors and cops over loud music and temper tantrums not so Fun.
2. Fan Melt Downs Over Outsized Expectations. No explanation needed.
3. Failure to land the big fish recruiting after kissing teenager's ***** for years.

You are good. I figured I would go by what he and George are saying, since they actually know, and talk to the man. They could be wrong, but I'll trust them over any Chicago or NBA source.
