I have said numerous times that it was my opinion that Fred didn't want his legacy to overshadow Orr's. Which is why I thought he would leave before he surpassed Orr's accomplishments.
Now we know why we have sucked for so long. Freddy has been taking out any successful coaches to keep Orr our most successful/celebrated coach.
Agree. No insider here, but follow Bulls' sentiment closely. I don't think there is any way the Bulls can have Thibodeau coach their team next year. You know how when someone gets fired and leaves their job and all of a sudden, they were the worst employee you've ever had? That's already happening with Thibs. I guess I'm responding more to the "Thib situation getting sticky" than Bulls versus T-wolves.
Bulls are shopping Thibs until there are no potential buyers, then he'll be fired.
That'd also explain our 1st round NCAA flameout this year. Johnny never had back to back NCAA tournaments with at least 1 win either.
I think Fred is motivated by competition and winning, not much more. If he's winning games and smokes Johnny's win record at ISU, I really think he's fine with it. I do agree with you in the idea that he would shy away from the pedestal and reverence ISU fans hold Johnny. But I really doubt Johnny's legacy impacts his career path.

Didn't Fred say something along the lines of not wanting to coach forever and someday saw himself being a banker? Maybe this is his career formula ... 5 yrs at ISU + 5-10 yrs in NBA = 50-ish and starting a new career at a bank where he can put his pile of cash.
Bulls hire Alvin Gentry, Fred takes a job at Wells Fargo, TJ gets the ISU job.
Just watched TJ's interview on DM reg.com, that demeanor tells you this thing is done and he knows it. There's no feeling there that he has any kind of dialogue now or intends to in the future if you read between the lines. Watch it a couple times, more than obvious the program is already operating without Fred.
That being said, sad to see him go, but he's leaving this thing in a whole lot better situation. After going through Wayno and GMac, many were uttering, "can't win or get talent to come to ISU" thus it was hard to believe we could get a quality coach. While it's depressing to realize if Fred isn't someone who'd want to make it a destination job, and I believe he said it was a destination job at his hiring presser, then who would. The team coming back next year draws some attraction to the coaches looking to move up to a high-major.
My advice after living through a couple debacles of our program, quit looking at what's going to happen 2-5 years from now and enjoy the squad we have coming back THIS year, we just don't know how long it's going to last.

Where is this "Fred told the players he'd be back" idea coming from? I'm still behind about 300 overnight posts here...
He said that? Didn't know. He still could "end" his career here.
He goes to the NBA, wins some titles, retires, comes back to coach ISU until his second retirement.
