The 1997-98 Bulls' payroll was just a touch over $63 million. Jordan made $33 million of that, and Toni Kukoc was the next highest-paid player at $4.56 million. They paid what they had to for Jordan, but the Bulls were cheap as hell even back then. Players were just a little more willing to take less money in order to win championships.

I thought the legacy would be a bigger issue, especially in his home town. It all started when he bought a house north of town and enrolled his kids in Gilbert schools instead of Ames. That was the first sign that the legacy would be incomplete.
