Offensive Line

And the troubling thing was the sideline reporter mentioned after halftime that Campbell said Memphis was showing a lot of looks we weren’t prepared for.

They had 4 ******* weeks to prepare for the game, did you think they were just going to roll out with the same **** they did all year or would they try something new?

Zero yards…were we not prepared for Memphis having players on the field?

WTF were they doing for a month? Doesn’t suggest to expect much development this offseason. We’re worse OL run blocking than we were at the end of 2022.

Memphis was sending 8 or 9 guys to the line every play. There is reason Becht set a school record today in passing. Memphis just said **** it we are going to stop the run and let them throw it all over the field.
Correct. Memphis sold out on all run plays and even play action with at least 7 and sometimes 8 players crashing the box. Our receivers were open all day long. That is how we passed for 450 yards even while running for his life. Game of chess. I would have run play action all day long without handing off. That is not in MC's blood. Great one-game strategy by Memphis.

ISU was completely outcoached on both sides, despite paying much more on salaries. Every single game, Heacock takes the first half off, then fights like hell to make the game respectable. It's like he has no scouting or game plan before each game, then he adjusts at halftime. The offense has horse blinders on and can't adapt or comprehend that the running game is not working. Definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting the outcome to change. I can tackle Sama with one arm tied behind my back; he's not going to break a tackle and he is useless with out a wide open hole. It took Campbell 7 years to figure out special teams. Until now, his recruiting was top 30; player motivation and development were pretty good, and it all worked. Now, with top 50 recruiting, net portal losses, and poor game coaching IQ, the best we can hope for is 6-6 seasons.

How many times does it need to be said…. Sama was NOT the problem in any way shape or form!

The kid is a beast. He has shown over and over again that he can break tackles and run people over.

He had no chance yesterday to do anything. The OL was the worst I’ve ever seen by a college level football team. No pride at all…. just let Memphis shove them around all day and didn’t care or fight back. It was pathetic.

Play action seems like the obvious counter to Memphis' game plan. Did we run it at all? I can't recall either way.

There needs to be multiple portal additions on the OL. It doesn't really matter where they come from, or how sought after they are. The room just needs more competition and options.

And no one better complain if they get a commitment from a Western Michigan or North Texas offensive linemen. Because if the scenario was reversed, I'm not certain Iowa St's 5th, 6th or 7th offensive linemen is getting picked up by a G5 school.

Perhaps target backups from programs that have good OL and know how to develop OL. FBS/G5/FCS all have linemen sitting on the bench better than zero yards, or multiple other games under this staff

Unfortunately changing out players is somewhat a scapegoat. CMC’s offense does no favors to anyone

yeah Nate S/CMC not getting enough blame here for scheme/making adjustments. OL was totally dominated off the ball.

had nightmares of james neal pulling only to be late to his spot for 4 yard loss... then to counter it.... stevo klotz and dean in the backfield/lead blocking. hmm wonder what that could mean.. lets get bigger and slower personnel out there LOL

Yes, our staff seemed to be great at managing through a pandemic. Can’t count on more pandemics.

Except for the notion that they got Covid in August which led to looking awful in the first game but not having issues the rest of the year like opponents.

You have to remember they’re going up against our defensive line in practice. A 3 man front. They are always going to look good in summer practices.

Ok so do people not know that teams have a scout team that runs what the opponent runs and the 1s on both sides of the ball rarely face off during the season or does ISU run their program like a mid-90s Iowa 1A middle school team?

What am I missing?

Disagree, yes OL sucked last night but Sama's vision and hesitation doesn't help there's a reason he didn't start this season regardless of his snow bowl performance. I'm not down on him, he just needs experience.

It’s so obvious the running game has been bailed out by absolutely elite running backs (Breece and Montgomery). The OL has a long way to go.

Honestly Rocco has been excellent in the pocket for most of the year and has bailed them out of sacks the whole season. Can’t imagine how much a QB like Kempt would have struggled this year.
Totally agree. Look at Deuce V when he was at KSU. Yes, the guy is a good RB (and made the Cowboys roster), but he probably out-performed due to his college OL. Imagine Breece or David having well-coached, highly competent linemen. Both may have been Heisman winners. Breece was propped up pretty well by the media, but would have been moreso had he been running behind at least an above-average line.

And this, I think, is Campbell’s (or his staffs) greatest flaw. We were down 19-0 until we realized we should try throwing the ball downfield. And even then, we only tried it every 5-6 plays. Yet we had guys open every ******* time.

The book on ISUs offense is out - theyre stubborn, they want to do what they know, which is run, and if it isn’t working, **** it, they’ll run some more.

I have no issue with a run-first mindset. I do have an issue if it’d nearly Hawkeye-esque when your passing game is pretty ******* talented
We passed 39 times and ran it 20 and 6 or 7 of those rush attempts were scrambles or sacks by Becht. You can’t say that’s a stubborn commitment to the run.
