Offensive Line

Awesome summary - great take!
I'll add a couple short blip concerns: 1) wondering if we should return KOs fielded at the goal line vs taking the ball at the 25?. 2) We still have trouble getting plays called, and in on time, when the D audibles and/or shifts.

I think the short play clock is intentional. We have seemed to shorten the games under Campbell.

Epenesa is way overrated.
Agreed...along with the Hok D-Line. I am not downplaying the improvement made by the Oline, they truly played a great game, but does Iowa truly have a great D-line? Says who? The local media? I didn't see it.

Epenesa is the second coming of KGB from the packers 10 years ago. Fantastic pass rush specialist, when he can’t pin his ears back, he struggles and gets worn down. Miami of Ohio LT basically handled him with very little help. We did chip and help at first, but less and less as the game wore on.

They have two good defensive backs and both played the whole game. Their safety that was out was already splitting time with a walk on before he got hurt because he was doing so bad and don't even get me started on that Moss kid
Right, it is a good FCS level secondary, one we should have exploited more. But that’s true in general. Like the UNI game, we facilitated it coming down to a single possession in which a miscue and bad call are game ending. That game should have been over by the fourth.

Exactly. My point is going forward, besides the result, I feel more confident about ISU's rest of the season than Iowa's. ISU just gave Michigan/PSU/Wisconsin/Nebraska the playbook on how to torch Iowa. Take care of our mistakes and this one was put away earlier.

Throw in the fact we definitely looked like the more talented team on top of all that

Also, Stanley made some good throws and used his feet to get out of trouble. Can't discount that either.

And he also made some really bad throws that can't be taken out of the equation. One could have been a pick six and the other takes the go ahead field goal off the board.

I was thinking today about how yes Iowa deserved to win because they feasted on our mistakes yet our mistakes can be correctable if the players are willing to buy in and get the finer details ironed out.

Iowa has some glaring issues in their secondary that I'm not sure you can fix with their personnel. They have a hell of a punter and kicker and I'm honestly just jealous of all these teams we play with great special teams play. Ours was horrific.

I don't even think other teams' special teams are great--they're just basic...they just look so much better than ISU because of how bad ISU's are.

Did anyone feel confident if the game came down to a field goal for ISU?

And I don't know if I've ever seen a punt return collision that bad.

Epenesa is really failing to live up to the hype so far. I was led to believe he was the 3rd Bosa brother but that’s not even close to the reality. Iowa might be better off using him as a situational pass rusher again this year.

I have been wondering if Kene is fully healthy. He's by far the most effective rusher we have had over the past two games. I also wish he had been returning kicks, a couple of bad decisions to return the kickoff yesterday.

I'm not completely sure until I see the game again but I have a general sense that the O-line play was at its best in the second half. I was screaming for them to keep feeding no 3 the ball and feel like we could have won the game at the end if we just ran the ball on first and second downs instead of getting into a 3rd and long. Our line was in the flow.

He got a whole tackle yesterday!

Iowa really doesn't usually pressure us much or get many sacks in the game unless it's a total crapshow. We just get the ball out too quick. Been that way for a long time.
And the one tackle he got was as the backside DE 10 yards down the field when Kene was making a cut. Pretty athletic tackle but you would think he would get one closer to the LOS.

Well let's be honest. Three times he was all but dead but the field was so slippery ISU gets flew past him.

I'd agree, but the Big 10 West outside of Wisconsin has been underwhelming, and Big 12 is looking well-rounded. While I think ISU beats Iowa seven out of ten times and primed to be a better team over the course of the year, even getting third or fourth in the Big 12 will be a dogfight with ISU, TCU, Baylor, OSU, and perhaps KSU all in the mix. Might be a slew of 4 and 5 conference win teams, because Tech, WVU and (maybe) even Kansas will probably steal one each from that group. Third probably finishes 6-3 in league.
