My son has been begging me for an Oculus 2 for his birthday...he is 10. I have never seen one before and done some Google searches on in but just not sure what to think of it? Anyone here played on this system before? Any recommendations or negatives? We have a Switch and Xbox...the VR thing sounds cool...but will it live up to expectations? Thanks!

I got the quest 2 last fall. It's fun. Although I discovered that I am very susceptible to motion sickness. Beat saber is a must buy.

I have a couple of friends that have them and I will be buying one soon. Even just the intro "game" thing is pretty amazing. One of them did admit to watching some adult entertainment on it with mixed results, some was good some was "too real" as he put it.

I could talk all day about vr. This stuff is going to be insane In a decade and is already way further than most people realize once they put a set on. I don't have a quest 2 but have a rift s. Quest 2 has better visuals when/if you hook it up to a high end PC w cord but then you lose the freedom of wireless which is big. Sometimes you have to get used to being in vr similar to having "sea legs" and being used to being on a boat. Some people handle it better than others but your body will become more.acclimated over time.

I hope people keep buying/supporting the tech to see how far we can take it. If people don't buy it, companies stop improving and developing it.

I think it sounds awesome! Although I thought 3D TV sounded incredible at the time it flopped as well! VR seems legit as an avenue for the gaming society to continue to explore.

I appreciate the responses. At first he was asking for a PS5 because he really wants to play the SpiderMan game but already owning Xbox and Switch I think our money would be better spent with the Oculus 2 so I am tempted to get that for him for his birthday. PS5 would seem like overkill right now and would divide future money up between games for our consoles.

I recently got the Quest 2. Well worth the money. It was my first "VR" system or gaming experience, and it blew me away. I can't tell you how many times I've about fallen over trying to lean on an imaginary wall or table, etc. in game.

Get it. You won't regret it. Vader Immortal is a superb game by the way :)

I have had the first quest since it launched. It's great! Tons of fun. Definite wow factor every time you show it to friends. The only problem I have is the games typically fall somewhere between mobile apps and full fledged console games. But they are priced that way as well. Besides, I'm not sure I could play a VR game for all that long in one sitting.

Vader Immortal is awesome! Robo Recall is pretty amazing too. And if he wants to freak out his friends get Richies Plank Experience. Find some videos of people playing it. It's hilarious. I've also got a pretty decent gaming PC I built last summer and have used the quest for VR gaming on that. Playing Dirt Rally with a VR headset and driving wheel setup is a REAL trip!

Thanks for the reply and info! I am thinking this is the route we will go. I get there are differences between PS5 and Xbox...but this seems like it will provide a unique experience. He can game on his Xbox and play on the VR (and so can I)!

How is the resolution? That's my only concern, I feel like even the best VR is still kind of blurry or am I wrong?

The next year or two is going to be huge for resolution and field of view. Some headsets are closer to 4k already and eliminate that "screen door" effect. Those are closer to $600 and are not wireless though. I prefer wired headsets so I can have more horsepower and better looking games. Quest basically has a mobile phone processor which is insane for how small it is, but it can't compete with a $700 video card in a pc.

Well said. I agree. However, the Quest 2 serves my needs perfectly fine.

I got the Quest at launch and we recently bought a Quest 2 for my son's birthday. The main thing to realize is that the scope of the games is going to be much smaller than a game on Xbox or Switch. There aren't any VR games that really have the long-term scope of most console games that offer 30+ hours of varied gameplay. So think of the VR as more for short bursts of gaming. The fact that you are limited by battery life kind of forces this anyway.

If you do get one, be sure to research SideQuest and learn about how you can use that. It's helpful to mod stuff like Beat Saber with custom songs or even loading free games that are in development.

If you have a gaming PC with a graphics card good enough for VR, then using the Quest connected with a cord can get some really impressive experiences. I'd really recommend checking out Star Wars Squadrons in VR. Its amazing, flying an X-Wing or Tie Fighter, being in the ship and looking around. Truly something I always wanted to experience as a kid and now you can.

Also, if you've got a PC like mentioned above and 5ghz wifi, you can download a program called Virtual Desktop, which will let you stream VR wirelessly from your PC to the headset. So you can get the PC quality with the freedom of movement. You really need a good wifi signal from your router though, otherwise the lag in the movement will make you legit want to puke. We do this for a gladiator game called Blade & Sorcery. If you enjoy letting of steam causing mayhem in games like GTA, then you need to experience the catharsis of maiming and dismembering people in VR LOL.

OK...this makes me want to go completely in immediately! Although...the frugal side of me is telling me to start slow! I appreciate the info! I am guessing we will go ahead and get a Quest 2...should we spend the extra $100 and get the larger storage (64gb vs 256gb)?

Quick question for you about the quoted. Do you download the Star Wars Squadrons on the gaming computer or the headset? I've only just bought the games through the Oculus headset, and have never hooked up my headset to my gaming computer. My PC is pretty studly, so I'm sure it could do the job.

I went for the 256. I just didn't want to have to "clear space" on the headset for whatever may come. Once it fills up you'll have to dump games to an external drive is how I understand it. I could be wrong.

I have Star Wars Squadrons on Steam on the PC and nothing needs to get loaded onto the headset. If I play it through Virtual Desktop wirelessly, you basically have a giant copy of your desktop in front of you, and then you just choose launch the game in VR from Steam. If you use the cable to connect into the PC, then the Quest jumps into the Oculus home area (similar to the Quest home but different and with a different dashboard), you can then choose to launch into a game from Steam VR from there.
