Not exactly sure.
With recent success of ISU and lack thereof by the ToE. Are they becoming a baseball school? Looking to be their most successful sport so far. We don't have a team outside of club rank, so maybe the hawks have found their niche. Being the baseball school of the Midwest. Tear the old dump down and put a baseball stadium there so the kids can have something to cheer about along with a wave?

Iowa got a steal with Heller. They essentially took the Paul Rhoads approach of hiring a native Iowan at a below-market price and if he wins, great, if not, no big deal because it's just baseball. Now, Iowa has a problem because Heller is great and the team is not only decent, but competitive at an elite level. Heller is going to have that program rolling and he's going to be fielding phone calls from other programs right around the same time Iowa is looking for new basketball and football coaches.

And to be honest, as much as people want it brought back, people didn't exactly fill up the Cap stands.
Baseball isn't exactly a revenue generator but they don't give full rides either....split up their allotted scholarships and give out 1/2 scholarships ect....so not a huge money drain either.

I think ISU starting up a Hockey program would be great. I'd like to see the Hawks start one but it ain't gonna happen. They'd have to drop something to start one and Hockey ain't cheap.

ISU has room in the AD to add sports and if the $$$ could be found I'd imagine it'd sell out. I nice little 5,000 seat hockey arena.....but it's all about the $$$ to get it going. Uphill climb.

I don't watch Hockey much on TV but in person it's a good time. I was stationed up at K.I Sawyer a long time ago :) and Northern Michigan University has a 5,000 or so seat Hockey arena and I went to several games...good time and I think it made money for them. Drew more than the D2 Football and Basketball teams. ISU has the fan base to support Hockey....just need the $$$ to get it started.

In a word...Title IX. My cousin was on the team when it was dropped.
That's too bad. Baseball is just one of those sport a AD should have......it's kind of sad what title ix did to wrestling as well....tons of programs dropped over the years.

JP isn't bringing back baseball (Wisconsin doesn't even field a baseball team) unless someone ponies up the bread big time.

I don't think we need hockey competing with basketball and wrestling either.

My older brother played baseball at ISU in the 1970s - it's kind of how I became a Cyclone fan.

In the 1980s, they just got hammered all the time by the Southern Big 8 schools. Never could get the pitching they needed to compete.

Honestly if a male sport gets added I would think soccer could make sense. Cheap, growing participation actoss the coutry at the youth level and not an inherant southern advantage like baseball or extreme northern advantage like hockey. Not a ton of male D-1 teams in the area and would be decent fan support and decent talent in midwest to draw from.

They are lucky Heller has Iowa connections because he could command a lot more money somewhere else.
And for ISU to bring it back? No. IMO, hockey has earned the right to get the bump before baseball.

I agree. It is very difficult to have any success in baseball this far north. Look at how many B1G schools have baseball and they rarely qualify or do well in the CWS.

I am fine strengthening our wrestling, volleyball, softball, soccer and golf sports. A little bit more investment and the right coaches can pay off well. Look at cross country. Men's and Women's conference champions.

If we ever add another men's sport, prefer hockey. Lots of strong programs in Midwest.

True....on further review that would be the no brainer add because of much lower start up costs than Hockey and it's the future....

If ISU was to add any more men's scholarships they will have to add another women's sport to add women's scholarships so we are talking about adding two sports if we add any men's sport.

I'm sad that our greatest two sport athlete will die with Iowa State still not fielding a team in one of the sports in which he excelled. But I know it isn't going to happen.

Pollard has said that we could add baseball and still be in Titile IX compliance. He could have been wrong (or lying) but I suspect it is true. When baseball and men's gymnastics were dropped I think one was for Title IX and the other was for budget reasons. The 10% drop in all men's scholarships was also due to Title IX but that wasn't just an ISU thing.
