North Grand Mall

Here's my North Grand updates that I haven't seen posted on here yet. Good news and bad news.

Good news: Rumor is out there that Dicks has looked at buying the lot that Sears was in. That would be pretty nice to have.

Bad news: Victorias Secret is rumored to be going out of business.

****'s coming in, Victoria's Secret leaving. Strange.

I think ****'s would do well in ames although it may push a store like Jax out of business. I had heard that the old Sears store was going to be divided into two and TJ maxx was going into one side. Did they change this, how solid is your rumor?

Don't see that happening. Jax is a true outdoor sporting goods store. Dicks is a sporting goods store that just also happens to sell outdoor gear. The die hard fisherman, hunters, campers, hikers, kayakers, etc. go to Jax for a reason and IMO they will continue to go there.

Edit- Forgot to add that i think Fleet Farm opening in Ankeny will hurt Jax more than ****'s in Ames.

They would maybe have to downsize a bit but I think their gun and fishing sales do pretty well. I always wonder why they carry some of the other stuff: rock climbing, snow shoes, etc.

Where is Fleet Farm going to be at?

No one get overly excited about Dicks. The source I have has a very good Ames reputation, however he said that Dicks has looked into coming into Ames for a long while. From what he has heard, the mall and Dicks have contacted each other, but it's a lot like trade negotiations in sports. Nothing official, and who knows if they are even close.

Lincoln Way to Grand?

When was the last time you tried driving that route? That takes a half hour plus under ordinary driving conditions. It should never take you half an hour to drive across a city the size of Ames. Part of that is horrible infrastructure, part of it is the mall is in a really bad location.

Here's another thing you're missing - any mall in Ames should be serving the region, not just the city of Ames. NGM is so horribly located (and has such a poor choice of stores) that people would rather just drive to Des Moines and shop there. Ames is losing $$$ to Des Moines because it couldn't close the deal to get the mall built on 13th and I-35. And until that happens Ames is going to continue losing business to Des Moines.

Hah, I had a job there in college setting up all the events and putting tables/chairs out. But I am way older than you.

That's awesome! I was the marketing assistant. I think the company that actually owns the mall has changed at least twice since then.

.

I actually drive that 4-5 times a week and it takes me 10 minutes max.

I'd take N Dakota to Ontario to Stange to 24th.

Thanks goodness the smart growth folks chased that other mall out of town. All that 1% sales tax going to the DSM schools makes much, much more sense.
