North Carolina Central

There are far too many upsets every year for anyone to be too comfortable. Per USA Today,

Since the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, seven No. 15 seeds have beaten No. 2 seeds; it's happened three times in the past two years. Seventeen 14s have beaten 3s, including a most unlikely underdog — Harvard — taking out New Mexico last March.

Upsets happen every year. I just hope we aren't going to be one of them.

Yes, they do happen every year as ISU knows. But let's also look at the numbers. Since 1985 there have been 116 2 seeds so those 7 upsets amount to 6.0%. During that time frame those 17 upsets of 3 seeds amount to 14.7%. It is sometimes misleading when they say X upsets of Y seeds in the last Z years because it doesn't account for there being 4 of each seed every year. That 15% is a pretty healthy number but not as drastic as one might think when you see that total of 17 upsets in 29 years.

I will say that I think the field of 68 is making the lower seeds stronger. It used to be the worst 4 teams occupied the 16 line, now it is the worst 6 teams. That means two teams that in field of 64 years would have 15 seeds are this year 16 seeds and two teams that would have been 14 seeds are now 15 seeds, and so on. That coupled with the increased parity in college basketball in the top 20% of all Div 1 teams will result in a small increase in the frequency of upsets.

Yeah. That embarrassing loss to an awful Baylor team in their first game of the Big 12 tournament was a strong way to finish the season and prepare for the NCAAs.....

Well...im not going to squabble over "backing in" equalling a loss in the conference tourney...but i know what you are saying.

Just took a long time to get over that loss....still not sure some of us are over it...and though nobody this year was around for it....you still know what a kick to the balls is and feels like. NC Central isnt a kick to the balls.....buts the equivalent of someone dropping their back foot prepping to do it.

I have no doubts we will be fine.......but i might keep a hand over the boys just in case.

And as an ISU fan, I understand that Fred is very quickly, if not already, making a case to be the best coach we've ever had. And this isn't football, where our best coaches have losing records. I mean, what's the guy got to do to earn your trust? He hasn't lost in the 1st (2nd) round yet, has a Big 12 tournament championship, has the second highest win total in a single season in school history and has more wins than any other ISU coach in their first four seasons, not to mention multiple player awards. At what point are you guys going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he can beat a ******* 14 seed?

IMO, a lot of times discussions/disagreements on this board devolve into either Black OR White thinking, with absolutely no shades of grey allowed, and it seems this thread is headed into those waters, unfortunately.

I'm confident that we'll win Friday night, but not cocky about it. I don't think we can win by just showing up because we're a 9th ranked Iowa State team, and they're not. That doesn't mean I'm pessimistic and bracing for a loss, just that I'm taking every opponent in this tournament seriously and worthy of respect, and I think and hope our team and coaching staff is doing that as well.

Curses and jinxes aren't real. Hampton has no effect on this team. Don't be ridiculous. Nobody should have to say this.

I don't necessarily disagree, except for the fact that I can be as cocky and confident as I want because it will play 0 percent into if the team wins or loses. The only ones that can't be that way are the players and coaches and I'm 100 percent certain Fred will have them all focused on the task at hand.

You just never know what will show up from the low-mid-major types, they could have the right combination of players to be cause a problem, or, they are somebody who Percy (last spotted in January) could score at will on in the low block.

Just a complete unknown.

Just imagining this made me smile. It would be nice to see Daniel, Percy and Tyler tearing them up with Dustin, Georges and Mel cheering them on and enjoying it from the bench.

I'm doubtful that it will get comfortable for this to even have a chance of happening for very long if at all.

Ugh....usually in these situations I am curious about our opponent. I'm just not feeling it for this game. I think we'll be up by at least 20, maybe even 25 points at some point in the game. They may bring it down to 15 or so, but this won't be a tough game by any stretch. Their "bigs" won't know what hit them. Ejim, Niang and Kane are going to tear it up.

Exactly. I've understood what you meant throughout this thread. In essence, you're showing a little humility and respect to the opponent.

I watched that video on their coach (Moton) reacting to being paired with ISU. He seems like a good guy with a lot of respect for ISU. That's always nice to see. I imagine the feeling is mutual. Any team that wins 20 straight games in Division I is solid.

Now....lets beat them by 25.

I hope we do destroy NC Central. But I'm not confident. They are in my opinion under-seeded a tad bit and would literally pose a threat to any 3 seed.

Do the 6-9 and the 6-11 players on the team get a lot of playing time? If not I think I know exactly what I would run if I was Hoiberg.

No they don't. They don't go deep into their bench, basically like us 7, sometimes 8 guys deep, but the two tallest guys don't get any playing time. Their biggest guys with PT are 6'7" and 6'8". Georges and Ejim should dominate them inside.
