No talent? Or poor coaching?

If you really believe this, here's a question for you. How does Boise State attract coaches who are so much better than anyone else's coaches at teaching the game? Boise State has done it for a long time under a lot of different coaches. Why are they always able to attract better coaches than 99 percent of the teams who also recruit nothing but 2 and 3 star kids?

I think it has more to do with evaluating than coaching. They can attract overlooked 2-3 star kids and they compete against teams that are not getting high-end recruits either. They build a winning atmosphere with these kids in a weak conference, build up their confidence and think they can take on anyone.

That attitude is a big part of why they are able to compete occasionally with the big boys of college football. If you have confidence and a winning attitude, you can sometimes overcome a lack of talent against those teams that should be better on paper.

I know one thing for sure. It's much more complicated than just better coaching. Everyone has professional coaches on staff. Some are better and some are worse, but I would think the difference is not that great, otherwise they'd be brick masons instead of coaches.

It's also the level of competition. Put Boise St. in the Big 12 or the SEC, and see how many 0, 1, or 2 loss seasons they have.

You know...the more I think about this, I don't even know if SJ would start. I know Darks would but I don't think SJ has done anything to put him above DJK yet. No linemen would start though.

Agree, but SJ would get a lot of playing time. A.A. would start, Darks for sure, and maybe the running backs (I think ISU would get the start). But no oline or TE would start.

On topic with the "no talent or poor coaching" question....There is talent at ISU. No doubt at least a handful of guys could start at Iowa.

Part of me feels ISU is a couple athletes away from being a pretty decent team, or else a couple more players (already in place)developing this coming year and making them a decent team.

Arob for instance.....4+ YPC average in his career. limited touches and basicaly averages 50 yards a game. just under 1,200 in his 2 seasons.
6 games in '08 with 11 or less rushes(missed game vs kent state)

His career total yardage over a 12 game season would come to 22 carries and just under 100 yards per game. He's not an elite runner by any means but hes fairly proven as a D1 back.

look at his production from the nebraska game on(6 games)...91 carries, 473 yards. 5.2 average.

Darks had a stretch of 23 catches in 3 games. 8,8, and 7. What other freshmen in D1 Fb were doing that?

With a little player progress, I think the stars we have on the team will only get better with some more help around them.

both but i will have to go with coaching look at all the mid major teams that win in their conference and go to big bowls... and win their big bowls... These teams players are not all americans so a lot of it has to do with coaching.

In another thread, I joked with an Iowa fan when he said ISU doesn't have many football players who could start at Iowa. Three at the most is what he thought.

I never really disagreed, or agreed with him.

Here are my questions: Does ISU lack talent on the football team? Or is poor coaching the reason for ISU's lack of success in recent years? Or is it a combination of both?

Just curious to see what everyone else thinks.
