No more band, please!

I actually prefer the band for basketball games than football games. There's always activity happening during football games. The band helps fill the silence during the dead spots during basketball games.

I can promise you the band doesn't like it any more than you do. One of the more powerful tools they have is the "Play/Sing/Play" version of Fights (where everyone but the tubas drops out in the 2nd "verse." It should NOT be played every game and it should ONLY be played in key moments. (i.e. don't play it at all when we're blowing someone out). But it's pre-scripted for (I believe) the 4:00 timeout, regardless of opponent or game situation..

I would agree with this. Even worse, it seems like that 'play sing play' has become 'time to go fights' as it seems to be a subconsious cue to hit the exits for a good number.

But yeah, it seems most people's problems in this thread arent caused by the band itself, but by the people who manage things going on at the game.. just like a lot of the promotions that suck the wind out of the building too. (or, for that matter, dumb things like covering up the opponent introductions with music this year, covering up the 5 claps tradition)

alarson, unfortunately you are exactly right about the play-sing-play / timeout. Lots of people grab their coats, like that version of Fights is their "last official duty" as a fan.

I even noticed that a little on Saturday. It was my first game this year and I was just floored. It was like a reflex for these people. I wonder if as an experiment at one game they didn't do "play-sing-play" at that timeout if less people would leave.

That's my favorite fight song....I love watching the flag guy make his loop and wonder how far I could run before grabbing an oxygen bottle !!

I've been avoiding this thread all weekend because:
a)I'm a former band member so I'm far from impartial; and
b)Even if I wasn't, it would just **** me off.

Let me just say this though, it is pretty damn weak to go after a group of students who put in a lot of time and hard work for this university for no other reason than having a little bit of fun and giving a **** about those teams.

Don't they get free tickets for being in the band? (If not they should get them) That should be a good enough reason to go. I think the band needs to stay, but learn some new songs. I remember last year especially they would play the same damn song every game. I know that many people have said they play the fight song millions of times and I'm going to agree. Again, I'm not a huge band guy and the majority of me could care less if they stayed or went, but since I'm a traditionalist they need to stay and play some tunes.

Sort of. They don't have to buy tickets to get in to play. They need to get their own tickets to any games they're not playing at, though (e.g., I was in Women's Pep Band and had to have tickets to go to MBB games).

Easy there, cowboy. I'm not going after the kids. And I understand they put in time and effort. Sounds like much of this comes from the man upstairs. I wasn't aware of that. If things were a bit different (less fight song, better music) then maybe I would feel different.

Was not my intent to offend anyone.

Having a Pep band is so much more original and unique than using the sound system. IMO a band can get the crowd involved much more than blaring things over the sound system. That's what makes the college game atmosphere better than the pros. In the NBA every arena plays the same crap over and over, if given the freedom the band can bring a lot more variety and excitement.

Plus the band is usually there 60-90 minutes before the game, and after most have left (meaning you could be waiting a good long while in the parking lot line) plus a couple hours of rehearsal each week. It can add up to quite the time commitment between MBB\WBB (and FB and VB during those times). During the overlap times it feels like you live at hilton\jts.

Nothing better than going from A football game where you were there from 6-5 and then going straight to a basketball/volleyball game for 3 more hours!! I love it though!
