Nick Saban retiring

I just don't see why many if any of the candidates being thrown around would want to go to Bama. Lanning, DeBoer, Kiffin, Sark all have established themselves in their programs, and in places that they can continue to thrive and that doesn't even include they don't have to follow a legend!

The only P5 coaches I could see would be Dabo or Norvell and that's just because no one knows what will happen in the ACC. I don't know if there's other hot coaching names in the ACC but that's where I would look if I'm Bama.
I imagine the NIL possibilities have to be insane in Austin.

DeBoer has absolutely zero experience south of the mason Dixon line. Is he really a cultural fit?
Poor phrasing by me. Meant program culture, feel like DeBoer runs a much more Saban style program than say a Kiffin/Lanning/Sark.

Southern culture vs DeBoers background, while different ball game. Part of the reason I think the biggest question mark would be can he recruit down there

Because Bama is the job. Love em or hate em, Texas and Bama are the top jobs. NIL money, National championships, recruiting grounds, coach pay. DeBoer at Washington is going not a conference where they will be treated as a second rate team. Bama you are the top team.

Btw probably would have thrown Notre Dame in there as a top school but I heard they don’t pay crap.

That's always been a bogus selling point. Most NFL cities are "colder weather cities" and almost every kid being recruited to ANY of these schools has NFL aspirations. Being able to sell a kid on Ann Arbor (infinitely better college town than Tuscaloosa) with proximity to Detroit (activities) shouldn't be that hard.

If anything it's EASIER to recruit the southern kids as the NIL makes it easier for their families to come watch them play. That was always a big advantage for the regional schools as those kids wanted to be closer to home as (many) came from poor families. That's no longer the issue with the NIL.

Recruiting to Michigan, Columbus, LA, Athens, and Austin isn't a problem. Assuming each school has the SAME resources (for staff and facilities), where would YOU want to live? Recency bias aside, Bama isn't a better place than those schools.
I am sure every school is this way but hit the strip about 11 o’clock on a Saturday night. As long as bama has a functional program and coach they’ll have no problem getting young men to come play football for them. First-class facilities, first-class athletics.

Tuscaloosa is a great campus town. You clearly have never been there. Not sure how living an hour outside of Detroit is any better.

Same radio station is reporting it’s because he’s meeting with the AD. I doubt he goes anywhere
I hope for his sake that is what’s happening. I hope for my sake he is informing the Washington AD he’s taking the Alabama job, because I think he would be an absolute disaster there.

I don’t mean any ill will to the guy, but I would love to see Alabama go back to post-Gene Stallings era, or worse. For that to happen, someone needs to be the guy to take them there, and I think DeBoer could be that guy.

He could be very successful there for a long time.

Own the West Coast... compete for Big Ten titles... easy path to the 12-team playoff.

And it's not like UW and the Big Ten TV money isn't there to be competitive with SEC schools.
Agreed.

And the man has never lived anywhere near SEC country. Plus all the pressure and expectations that would go along with following Saban... I wouldn't touch that job if I were him.

He's building a great thing and Washington, and they're set up for the long haul now with the B1G invite.

Not saying you are wrong as I’ve seen it said a lot but what makes you think he would be a disaster?

He’s won everywhere he’s been and turned Washington from dumpster fire to the championship game in 2 years.

This one kinda surprises me.

I thought he'd be the guy to move. The massive revenue gap between the SEC and FSU is going to be felt more and more each year. Plus, the committee has already shown that FSU is going to be treated as an outcast. Norvell is already in the SEC footprint, so it should be a smoother move culturally for him than someone like DeBoer.

Looks like the big name options at the top of everyone's list are dwindling down fast.

Not to mention if he has success he could turn Washington into a national power similar to USC.

It’s one of 3 schools on the west coast that cares about football, wealthy donors, hot bed of talent, more desirable location, in a P2 conference, doesn’t really have to compete with its in-state brother anymore, etc. With the right guy there’s nothing stopping them from being an annual contender in the same vein as Alabama.

Hey…I could be wrong. It’s why I include words like “I think”. I’m not using absolutes, ya know?

My guess is based on fairly simple things. I haven’t done a deep dive or anything. All I know…he is from South Dakota and has never played or coached south of the Mason-Dixon Line. We are one country, but things are still very, very different depending on what part of the country you’re in or which you have expertise/experience.
