Mostly in the hope that it might result in a little variety in our discussion here? I don't know about you, but arguing over Otz qualifications for the job by people who know nothing about the situation and favor conspiracy theories got old over a week ago.
I'd take Nurse for sure. He was the associate HC for ISU right before McDermott was hired afterall. Hire a few good recruiters/coaches and I think we'd have a chance to continue some of that success built upon the last handful of years.
Otz is known as a recruiter who may play hoiball. That is about it for a top power five job. Just shows we are not a destination school for coaches with the short list of candidates. As far as setup goes with otz coming back, hoiw deep is your head buried in the sand. Fred and JP thought Otz is the best they could find once Fred was off to the pros. We do not need to call it a conspiracy plot, just that Fred greased it for Otz to get the job if no candidates showed up. Looks to me the list is a midget list. They are all a gamble. Our coach will be a novice compared to the other nine Big12 HCs.

Put it another way. McDoormat, Altman, Ben Jacobson, Floyd, Morgan, Larry E all have a bigger resume than any of the midget fours interviewing today. Fred won a hundred games and left town. Everyone of these coaches on the list may do the same after six-ten years. Fred knew a ton of people. The new coach will be more like a newbie.

Nurse never coached at ISU. McDermott hired him and then left ISU for Creighton. Not sure he ever worked a day for ISU.
Sign me up for any coach who can win 100 games in 3 years, even if he does bolt right after.
He would be more of a gamble on the recruiting side. I'll admit I know little about him, but it sounds like he was very successful in the D league. It's hard to say exactly how this would translate to college. It sounds like he is a fast-paced, offense first coach who knows how to tailor his game plan to the talent he has available. He could be the best bet for making the most of next years roster. '16/'17 is going to be a make-or-break year no matter who the coach is. It could be worth the risk.
Potential Euro network + previous connection to the program + Iowa roots also help build the case for him. I'm not getting on the train just yet, but I am intrigued.
I don't see Nurse being that much more of a gamble on the recruiting side than Fred Hoiberg was. Nurse could sell his NBA connections just as well as Hoiberg. These guys are as good of recruiters as their assistants. If T.J. was still an assistant, why would he all of a sudden not be able to get guys to come to ISU? He was doing it before Fred was here?
The more I think about Nurse the more I think he would be a good hire. Not idea if he was even brought in to interview, but he does have a championships on his resume.
I talked about Nurse days ago but was shot down by Jeremy. He has a track record of success everywhere he goes, has NBA connections and gets the most out of his guys. Whether it happens or not....whatever. At this point I want someone to be hired soon.

I never said he COACHED. I said he was associate coach and that part is true. He was working for ISU for a short bit. There's a big difference - if I thought he coached ISU I would have ******* said it.
And TJ is a good recruiter. Great, put them together on a staff. Do you think the head coach has to be amazing at every single thing to make a good team or something?
