Regardless of who the coach is, the OC and DC are key positions to fill with quality coaches.

Offense - how about something other than off tackle run, off tackle run, QB draw, punt. How about a coach that can do something that hasn't been done in 12 years - perfect the screen pass and throw to the running back in the flat? Use the tight end consistently. We lost games to teams that just throw to the TE a lot. Oh, and how about an OL blocking scheme that works?

Defense - more stunts, more blitzes and cover 2 for the D backs. I always dominate NCAA football with cover 2 D.:yes4lo:

how dare you come up with the concept of a screen pass! Especially since we have watched other teams do it to us all year!

If Brewster comes here, I think it is fair to say that we will see a huge improvement on the Offensive side of the ball. All good NFL teams have a awesome running back, and a good TE that can run down the field and spread out the LB's for pass plays that are actually route driven and not busted plays that we have watched all year.

Defensively any DC would be excited about what he has to work with. There are a lot of young guys, but defensively our team held in there a lot this year when we thought they would get hammered. If the Offense would have shown up, they would have been even better b/c they would not have been on the field all game.

At the very least, he'll acknowledge that there is a tight end.

For years, a large frustration with Mac & co is that I'm not sure such a position existed. We rarely used it on offense, and it was even more rare to see us defend it on defense.

You get a good TE on you squad, it can make a huge difference. Just look to our fine-feathered friends to the east. They've killed us (and most everybody) with the TE position for 25 years now. And I'm not going to make a strong comparison here, but it seems that some of our "better" squads have had strong TE's.

Both Nickel and Barkema had good years in 2005 but have disappeared this season.

Then again, the whole offense has disappeared.

With any head coach the staff will be vital, but in looking at Brewster, I see the following staff possibilities based on his ties:

Asst. OC and QB Coach/Passing Game Coordinator - Major Applewhite (1st year at Rice and they actually seem to be scoring points);

Asst. OC and Running Game Coordinator - Bruce Chambers (UT RB Coach)

DC & LB coach - Kirk Doll (Current Bronco LB Coach)

DL - Oscar Giles (Current UT DE Coach)

I would not be adverse to retaining Simms, Schneider and Ash off the current staff due to their recruiting ties with players currently in the fold, but I would move Simms to RB coach where he was at Colorado with good success. However, that would be Brewster's decision.

I am also sure Harbaugh could fill an excellent staff, but I think he would be the QB/OC coach himself, similar to Charlie Wiess.

Good idea and perhaps hire Ben Bruns as the offensive line coach. I really think he would be great at that spot!

I've always been a huge proponent of throwing it to our TE more. Both Barkema and Nickel are pretty damn solid in the hands department. How many drops can you honestly remember them making aside from one near the beginning of the Toledo game?

Good idea and perhaps hire Ben Bruns as the offensive line coach. I really think he would be great at that spot!

Quite honestly, Ben (or Luke VanderSanden) needs more seasoning before being the OL coach at a B12 school. A better position would be to put him as a TE coach with an experienced OL coach in charge and give him time to develop. Generally, young coaches need to start as just a position coach such as S, DE, TE, as opposed to running the whole show. I also like the idea that Ben could be an aid to keeping a strong foothold with Iowa recruits and HS coaches so as not to lose ground to UI in that regard.

I just want to see a staff that can show Cyclone fans some creativity once in a while. I loved Mac but I think all of us could predict about 90% of the plays that were coming. Let's get someone who can use Blythe the right way and not rely on nickel and diming all day long.

I would like to see the new coach be someone who has experience running a spread offense or something which emphasizes quick reads. It is really hard to develop offensive linemen who are good run blockers and also capable of sustaining pass blocks long enough for deep drops. I also think it is easier to recriut receivers for this type of formation because height isn't such a factor. I hope the defensive coordinator is a fundamentalist. Good tackling and playing smart can cover up some of the problems with speed.
