Cael makes a "base salary " of 175,000
We all know he makes a lot more than that . This is from a 2012 article on Brands ....The deal pushes Brands closer to the highest-paid coaches in the country. Oklahoma State reportedly bumped the salary of coach John Smith up to $284,980 after the 2011 season. The Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot-News reported last November that Penn State has paid coach Cael Sanderson as much as $500,000.....

PSU was offering a big shiny new temple to wrestling funded by some deep pocket supporter. Do we have to go down the path of facility upgrade to get a truly decent coach (who might bring his recruits with him, ala Cael and the Brands did!) worthy of rebuilding the program back to it's traditional level?

You left out the biggest reason on his list of reasons for taking the job: Pennsylvania and Ohio high school wrestling.

PSU has managed to keep their coaching salaries shielded from open records laws. $500K annually is a decent bet with the Penn State Wrestling Club (DEEP pockets) kicking in a decent amount of that.

Real talk here, this coaching search is oddly quiet, does/has anyone heard anything on who legitimate candidates are or who is on JP's shortlist. Obvious name is Bono but one rumor is saying that bad blood there may prevent him from even interviewing as of now.

The only way it isn't quiet until the season is over is if they promote from within. Any other candidate will still be coaching their current team until at least day one of NCAAs.

1. He is not just the XC Coach, he is also the Director of Men's and Women's Track & Field, so his pay is covering three jobs.

2. To say that XC has almost zero history at ISU is being very ignorant.

"oddly quiet" - If you are talking about rumors, I think there's been a few rumblings, but I'm not sure how much anyone really knows about the situation. Pollard is known for being secretive and tight-lipped about his coaching searches - everything is simply speculation. That said, I think everyone is able to figure out the pool of candidates with the best chance of landing the job. It's simply going to be a matter of what direction Pollard wants to take.

If you mean an official announcement, then I agree with Judoka here. I doubt we hear anything until after the NCAAs, unless the hire is from within the program. So if we don't hear anything by the Big 12, I'd expect it's an outside hire.

One thing I am curious about is the releases of the NLI. Somebody said they need to be answered in 30-40 days. With Allar, that will be coming up pretty soon, since he asked for one a week to 10 days before KJ's resignation.

Can they be extended or issued or a final decision need to be made?
 
I agree with Judoka, BillyClone, Buf87, etc., about what we will hear and when.

It's kind of an odd situation, the timing and what we are likely to hear.

As people know, from the Chizik hire for example, JP has been VERY secretive in the past. JP and any hire who is currently a head coach elsewhere would almost certainly want to keep it under wraps. If an outside hire, it is possible that it gets leaked somehow, though I wouldn't bet on it. Not only would it be inconsistent with past JP coaching searches, but wrestling is a small community, so maybe it is easier to keep to a small number. If accurately leaked, it seems likely to be a mistake and unintended by those involved.

As far as I can remember just about every school asks recruits to wait until they meet the new coach. So my possibly wrong assumption is we tell them no for now but that we'll give them an out if they still want to leave after the new coach is announced.

Following the Chizik and McDoormat hires, JP really has not been any different or more secretive than any other AD in the country. Since he is our guy, we tend to give him too much credit for this. If you recall, the last wrestling search was quite public and even had candidates that were known and giving quotes in the paper. (KJ's famous "If I am the guy, let's go already" comes to mind) At KJ's hiring presser, JP even acknowledged that it is impossible for a stealth search in wrestling because it is such a close-knit community and everybody talks to each other.

The start of this process in season provides the AD the best cover possible for a non-public search for now. It will come out, it always does.

This is incorrect on so many levels. If you don't care about the sport- I totally get it and would not argue that fact. The history of track and XC at ISU is the school's second strongest tradition behind wrestling and it is not as far behind as many may think. Also, remember that staff and pay for track and XC is actually 6 team sports and not 1 sport, that actually matters in the line-item budget.

I will only provide the numbers in grand totals instead of breaking all six programs down 1 by 1.

Men's track and XC programs. 34 conference titles and 2 NCAA titles. Multiple NCAA team finishes in top 5 as well as 24 national champions come from these programs.18 Olympians have come from the men's program including a silver and bronze medal as well as two more 4th place finishes. ISU was 9th in the 2015 NCAA indoor championships

Women's track and XC combine for 21 conference titles and 0 NCAA championships with multiple Top 5 and Top 10 finishes. Before the NCAA adopted women's sports around the time of 1980- ISU women's teams had won 5 AIAW national championships- which is the same schools that are now NCAA but again, there was no NCAA governance of women's sport at the time. The women's programs have produced 27 national champions across the 3 sports. Cyclone women have had 8 Olympians including a gold medalist. Sadly, one of ISU's most famous teams ever in any sport was the 1985 women's XC team that was the NCAA Runner-Up that lost its coaching staff and several athletes in a plane crash coming home from the NCAA Championships.

To say 0 history is just not informed. Now if you want to argue that wrestling needs to raise its budget and pay, I am right there with you. Personally, I take the money from women's hoops but that is just me.

I would be shocked if he doesn't make more. Their wrestling club is far better supported than Iowas.

Pretty strong rumors said 500K, all in, when he took the job.
 
I've read anywhere from 500K to 800 but nobody knows exactly. Regardless of the exact amount, he winds up the highest paid coach one way or another.
