Tell her times are tough and hand her a ball of twine and say you plugged the dehumidifier in down stairs.
About 2 months ago we bought a pair of LG models and they just arrived last week.

The wife wanted a top load and I didn't care either way.
The truth is that we had 15 year old basic whirlpool washer and dryer and they served us for 15 years without any problems. The new ones seem nice and everything but in reality without kids we really don't do a ton of laundry. There are tons of different wash and dry modes but the reality is that after the first week, 99% of the time we'll just use "normal". I will say that they are quieter and use a lot less water.
I read that SpeedQueen had some issues for the last few years but maybe that's changed. CR doesn't really love SQ. They give them high marks for reliability but just average for washing performance. They seem to love LG HE models.

Unless you have a great reason to buy both, I’d consider just replacing the broken one. I had a 20 year old set and the washer went out. I just replaced the washer and got 7 more years out of the dryer. Of course my laundry is in the basement, so I don’t mind if they don’t exactly match.
