new 'walking cy' logo concept

there are a lot of things that i love about the old 'walking cy' logos and some things that i don't. i wanted to combine some old elements with some updated ideas to create a new-old version of a mascot mark. here's what i came up with:

I really like it. Much simpler version and the older logo really looks like the bird is on cocaine with some of the details and refinements. Well done! I like Cy without the boots, but the feet/talons look a little big no in relation to the body no? I'm not graphic designer though.

One of the issues with the Cy on the right, AKA Bucky Cy, is the use of two cardinal tones. I think it has been a problem with our visual style ever since we dropped tertiary blue. The two cardinals make all of our logos appear washed out or faded, while being harder to read at a glance. It's one of my gripes with the beveled I-State, and it didn't do anything to help any of the alternate logos we have tried since 2008: the Bugle, Punching Cy, or Whirlpool Cy.

When we ditched the blue, we should have reverted to the darker cardinal while using black outlines instead of trying to boycott black in any of our visuals. And I think now that we embrace black in so many of our uniforms, it's time for that mistake to be corrected.

i spent a good amount of time messing with and taking all these things that have been mentioned into consideration. putting the full I-STATE logo on the chest is not necessary to me, nor does it look good to have something smaller/more detailed included, while also making it difficult to reproduce the logo at smaller sizes with clarity. also, look no further than the letter jackets to see an acceptable use of the block I. as for the feet, my main reference was the 1965 walking cy with the pennant in his mouth. bird feet are weird and sometimes look like they're wrong even in real life. to me the bucky-cy looks like he's wearing puffy slippers. i did make the feet a bit bigger because it just didn't look balanced enough. the old walking cy with boots looks the most balanced to me compared to the feet on the older marks. anatomical correctness didn't play into this design as much as some of the other factors so hopefully it can be looked at in terms of a mascot logo more than anything.

After spending a minute studying your concept, I really like the refinements you made on the previous versions of Walking Cy while bringing in some elements from Bird-in-a-blender Cy.

First, reducing some of the finer details and noise of the feathers, particularly in the tail, arms, and the black of the face makes it a much cleaner look. This is a logo that can read well when smaller, or viewed from a distance, which is one of the issues that plagues the older versions of Cy, especially whirly-bird Cy.

Second, I like that you went more arm, and less wing while still keeping feather details. The fists/hands on the Walking Cy blend in with the wings, while the feathers on the arms of the Bird-in-a-blender Cy look more like motion lines than actual feathers.

Third, you managed to keep is distinct from the Louisville and Arizona (NFL) Cardinal logos.

One nitpick I do have is the feet: because of the way they are angled/rotated they somehow look like they are backwards. To my eye it look like the left/front foot should be on the back leg, and the right/back foot should be on the front leg, if that makes sense.

Also, I would be curious to see a head only version of this. That could be neat for a helmet logo.

I like it a lot. Would like to see the "toenails" in white.

I'm having trouble picturing it in my head, but would the Trice stripes look ok or awful on this concept?

I totally see your point, and agree. Ole BuckyCy doesn't need a re-do though, now. It just needs to fade away.

Oh, I agree. BuckyCy should absolutely be put to pasture. But it is a useful illustration of what we shouldn't do.
And I suppose if they didn't want to use a black outline (I don't know why not) they could use an extremely dark, almost black, dark, dark red.

Oh, but no. They would not likely do that! It would be adding another color. Can't have that!
