Really stinks that the players hate all red because I love the monochromatic look.

Agree. I like the all-cardinal c/c/c. Not sure it is my favorite, but in top 3. I think we'll see it this year. Not sure all the players 'hate' it. It just might not be in their top 5 or so, I don't know.

Thing is, when we do wear the c/c/c again, and win, we will likely see it more often. LOL. That is one thing I've heard about Campbell, he is perhaps superstitious, which I think is kind of stupid. Wear what you want when you want, regardless of win/loss record in a particular set.

I am one that does not like the all cardinal look. Most likely cause we can't seem to match the shades of cardinal between helmet and pants.

Unfortunately that's a tall task for ANY football program. Helmets reflect light differently than jerseys do, and are even different under different light sources.

Agree, helmets will almost never match the jersey/pant or primary color. They've got it about as good as they can. And it needs to be a little darker than the primary color IMO, as it reflects light more (especially gloss/semi-gloss). The big mistake was the chrome cardinal (so much lighter appearing).

Yeah the chrome helmets were WAY too light. Looked almost pink under the lights. If they ever come back I hope they are improved. They also chipped off a lot during play.

Other than black, which seems to be the easiest to match, I've been looking around the internet and I think the only school that does well with matching helmet to jersey colors is, of course, Oregon. With their limitless Nike resources they can perfect these things easier than most schools.

A lot of school tend to have their helmet be a different color altogether than their jerseys. The contrast helps I think. But I know we probably won't get gold helmets, even if it could be fun. But still, no GGG, please.

They were fine at night. Everyone lost their **** about it during the Liberty Bowl, because it was gray/overcast so the reflection was lighter.

Good point (along with @cyhiphopp post about difficulty matching helmet/jersey) --- some helmets work better under lights, compared to daytime-overcast.

I'm not a fan of W-B-W but in part it's because the first time it was used, vs. TCU in '19, it was overcast (also one of those fun weather-delay games) AND it didn't contrast enough w/ TCU's combo, either. (I had no qualm with the game result, at least )

I'm fine with C-C-C, I'd rank it lower than 3rd (if we're ranking both home & road and various black combos) ... but it's better than some choices ... in recent years, all-cardinal is used only a couple of times each season, so it's cool to see it when it happens.

Those blue socks actually look sharp. I’m not endorsing a return to the navy, but this shows how jerseys can look better with subtle accents. Use more white.

I remember a night game in the late 90s or early 00s when we wore C/C/W vs. Missouri. Marc Timmons pick 6 maybe? I thought it was kind of a cool look then. It’s ok now.

Agree. Yeah no blue again but they tried some things that were close.

At least we know the staff is trying to work on football stuff, not uniforms.

Agree. And the 'Notre Dame' gold helmet gave me an idea. Instead of purchasing a 4th helmet (very expensive), just take the black helmet, and spray paint it gold whenever you want that look (1-2x/season maybe). If you wanted the black helmet again, spray paint it back to black.

This way you could have your gold helmet and only have to purchase 3 (not 4) helmets. I could see that working.

Maybe, I'm not so sure. Would have to have a former equipment manager type chime in.

New helmets are I think $400-$1000+ (last time I checked was a year or two ago), depending on the helmet type. That's pretty expensive.

Contrast to spraying a helmet 2-3x/per year (between least used colors of black and potential gold), seems like the 3 helmets only and the occasional spray paint is a much cheaper option, if done well.

And here's what I really don't know but am guessing on. I think the equipment staff often has to strip and repaint/ touch-up the regular helmets anyway, after each game/weekly practice. So I think spray painting is not a huge deal if done infrequently?

Add: Plus each individual helmet has to be custom-fitted/tuned to each player. A 4th helmet is just a lot to ask for IMO. I'd like it but maybe unreaslitic.

The "uniform matchup" aspect is probably overlooked unless you're among us sports-clothing geeks. Of course it's usually random, one team can't control the other's uniform decision nor respective school colors (within context of what is allowed for outfitting rules)

This specific example you posted - that's arguably KU's sharpest combo ... and there's white jersey for road team and white pants for home -- and the primaries of cardinal vs blue offer contrast and don't clash.

Thank you cyfanatic13! That was exactly what we needed to know.

The idea of 'Notre Dame' made me think of the spray painting option. I think that's the way they might have done their helmets many years ago before modern helmets, acrylics, etc. You are right though, spray painting helmets now would likely not look good at all, too much paint chipping off, lack of proper cure time, etc. And I'll bet modern helmets have the color blended in thruout the color of the plastic, probably have for many years now.

This is why I am, for now, holding on to us keeping just 3 helmets. Adding a 4th would be very expensive at a time when we likely can not nor should not try to afford it.

I think the Cardinal/Cardinal/White is our best home look, and should always be our home look. (Yes I know if the jersey had white numbers it would be perfect, but I'll take what I can get.)

Hijack question: do they wear the same jersey through the year or do they have new ones each game? What’s the average “life” of a jersey?

Imagine the conniptions that would occur when, under your proposed scenario, parts of the top gold layer chip off during a game to reveal black. Or vice versa.
