New transfer rules

How about if this was in play now...Scott Frost just moves the (majority of USF) team with the staff to Lincoln.

This could turn coaching turn over into a nightmare as well. Buy a coach...get the players for free?

You say that's crazy...but A&M just guaranteed $75 million for a coach that finished 6-6 in the SEC...stupid, crazy, **** happens.

This is a fantastic point. Imagine a coach taking all 22 of his football starters to another school, or all 5 baskeball starters. The incoming coach could do the same thing, but what a **** show.

Is there a date when students that transfer have to declare by?

Theoretically, could a team have a starting QB get hurt in spring practice and then poach another team's starting QB to play for them in the fall? I think this scenario would be very rare, but I'm trying to figure out the timing of transfers.

Losing Darius McNeill when we did sucked because we had to scramble in a short time frame, but losing an already established key piece after signing day has passed seems like a very scary possibility.

I would think there would have to be a deadline for transfers before the upcoming season.

You just know there will be fallout after spring football practices every year though, with guys who didn't move up the depth chart looking at their options.

There are probably going to always be some kids who want to stay at their original school, but I could definitely see a coach taking their QB with them or a star RB.
Basketball will definitely be more of a problem with just a few star players making a team great.

You take 4-8 of your skill / top players off a 22 man FB roster & fill in the holes with kids from the school you're moving to...that's a major upgrade.

What would Montgomery do for a program? Add a few other skill players and our DT, Lanning, & Cotton-Moya...that's a game changer...or at least it's been for Iowa State.

I think this will end up hurting the players in the long run. Transfer just because then getting into a bad situation. Get cut because it will be easier for a coach to recruit over you. Gutting marginal programs.

I'm an ISU fan, but my goodness, that doesn't mean I have to support the continuance of a terrible practice, just because it might affect ISU poorly. Think about that. What a dangerous attitude to have.

I think you’re being unfair. These sports have special rules because the athletes get special treatment and they generate revenue. There is a tremendous amount of risk for the school with these athletes and these sports, so it makes sense that they would create a bit more control over them.

It’s also very easy to have this attitude now but let’s say Prohm gets a new job in June, the recruits and wigginton and Lard all follow him to the new school. That would be utterly devastating for Iowa State basketball, and Iowa State has spent a significant amount of time and money investing in the recruitment and development of these players. Would that be “fair” for them to leave? I think a reasonable argument could be made that it’s not.

You literally answered your own question. Standout sophomores don't transfer to Alabama because they have to sit out of year.

If you really think ISU will do well under this proposal, just incredibly naive. If a slimeball like James Franklin convinces David Montgomery to transfer to PSU to replace Barkley, you think ISU will just be OK picking up a new HS kid or taking a transfer from PSU that Franklin cuts, or was already riding the pine? Delusional.

The problem with your scenario is that Franklin talking to a player currently on a team is still tampering. Tampering isn't going away.

[QUOTE="kingcy, post: 6005781, member:......Just think a school can now hire a coach and he can bring his whole team with him.[/QUOTE]

This is the biggest issue that would have to be addressed with some type of restriction. The new coach could run off a lot of back-ups to make room for the hoard of guys he could bring with him.

Athletes would be allowed to transfer schools without restriction if their coach were fired or left for another job as part of sweeping proposal that is making its way through Division I, CBS Sports has learned. However, athletes would not be permitted to follow the departing coach to their new program.

I don't think Dodd knows what "without restriction" means.

I'm ok with that restriction btw.
