Just saw a tweet from what looks like a former SJSU punter. Guessing a walk-on and some competition for Dunn. Any info?

Edited for punter, not kicker...

No offense to Dunn personally but some of his punts last year were absolutely terrible. A little competition and a security blanket will be nice to have.

I thought that he should have been benched after that first game, but he did get better. Gotta be more consistent this year and stop with the rugby punts.

Truth. That game was unfortunately the teams, and many individual players, shakedown cruise that should have been the rained out game.

The Iowa game was on BTN several days ago. Dunn had a 14 yard punt followed by a 13 yard punt. Our offense seemed to start at about the 10 yard line most of the game. You just can't do that against a P5 team, ask your offense to go 90 yards if they are going to get any scores. Of course, we also were set to go on our first drive from the one yard line when a false start forced us into a field goal instead. So yeah, we really needed that SDSU game last year to work out the bugs.

Many of us remember the shaky start against Iowa, myself included. It looked to me like he was not consistently dropping the ball and that caused some mishits off the foot. I would chalk this up to the increased difficulty and decision making of a rugby style punt.

I just clicked through our game stats from last year to check out Dunn's punting numbers and
Dunn had 8 punts that I decided were poor. These were if a punt was 35 yards or less and did not end up inside the 20. Nothing scientific here, but it makes some sense to me.

3 of those poor punts were in the first game.

Another thing I noticed while clicking through the games was how many punts had no return or were returned for very short gains. That takes good execution by the whole punt unit and is a reflection of good coaching.

Dunn did improve as the season went on and there were some games where he was great. I think he only had one touchback the entire season. Now that he has a year of play in a big conference I expect him to be better this year. And I'm sure he is getting used to punting in windy conditions.

This new punter is a redshirt sophomore it looks like. I assume he has to sit this year as a transfer or does that not apply to walk-ons?

I thought a few times he looked slow getting kicks off. That could be an adjustment from rugby too, IDK.

I'd agree with what risi said above, Dunn struggled in the Iowa game (first game) but was serviceable after that. Not great, but okay. As fans I think we all got fixated on the bad punts in the Iowa game, and then anytime he didn't crush one we kind of came unglued recalling those 13 and 14 yarders...

He will be better this year.

Completely anecdotal, but it seemed like many of his bad punts came at times we couldn't afford them. Or we'd be close to midfield and he'd punt it 32 yards. How many were downed inside the 10? It's not 1999 anymore. Punters should be graded on a harsher curve than simply getting it inside the 20.

i wasn't a fan, but he showed that he has a big leg. Just need way more consistency.

With the defense ISU has, I would rather he put it between the 10 and 15 every time with no touchbacks than inside the 5 half the time with a touchback the other half.
